Editorial reviews

Geralt of Rivea roams a world of wretched monsters and ruthless royalty. His combat abilities, combined with his wit and magic abilities, make him a much sought-after assassin. But when faced with moral quandaries and romantic endeavours, Geralt is challenged in a way that cannot be solved by his skill with a sword.

The Witcher Saga has served as the source material for a wealth of adaptations, including a much adored video game franchise and a Netflix series. Whether you’re already a fan or are looking for your next fantasy obsession, The Last Wish is a perfect place to start. Rich with details and vivid world-building, the audio edition is made even more exciting by the rich, deep tones of narrator Peter Kenny.

Publisher's Summary

Introducing Geralt the Witcher - revered and hated - who holds the line against the monsters plaguing humanity in the best-selling series that inspired the Witcher video games and a major Netflix show.

Geralt of Rivia is a Witcher, a man whose magic powers and lifelong training have made him a brilliant fighter and a merciless assassin.

Yet he is no ordinary killer: he hunts the vile fiends that ravage the land and attack the innocent.

But not everything monstrous-looking is evil; not everything fair is good...and in every fairy tale there is a grain of truth.

Andrzej Sapkowski, winner of the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement award, started an international phenomenon with his Witcher series. The Last Wish is the perfect introduction to this one-of-a-kind fantasy world.

Unique fantasy with brilliant voice acting.

A collection of short stories following Geralt and laying the foundation for several interesting characters. The stories are descriptive and well written and the characters are interesting and unique. The voice acting is incredible, it is easy to forget one person is doing the reading. My only gripe I have is the series of short stories gives the book an awkward progression that doesn't really head to any kind of overarching conclusion.

Bit of a let down unfortunately.

Struggled through the entire thing. Really wanted to turn it off but I persevered. unsure if it was the confusing story time lines or the fairly dull narration. I'll give another book a go to see of the series gets better.

Unique yet familiar

Sapkowski clearly draws from folktales in his works, however he puts such a refreshing spin on them that you hardly notice.
Kenny delivers a great performance but bear in mind his mispronunciation of Dandelion can be a little bit annoying.

Lilac and Gooseberries

Great story and insight into the Games but had issues with the Narrator. The book was well delivered but for some reason found myself having to turn up the volume much more then other books and had to really concentrate to understand, many times had to rewind and listen again.

Solid listen

I was lead to Geralt or Rivia through the hype of pop culture. Having not played the game or watched the Netflix series, It was difficult to navigate the complex world. But I quickly became immersed in the richness of this dark fantasy. It is well worth the listen. The narrators performance was solid, but nothing special. I cringed at his attempts at female characters.

Eh

This book personally for myself was good, atmospheric and interesting. However it wasn't really something I enjoyed, This might be because I have come from the video games this this book. And I wasn't able to keep track of things. I think its more of a book you need to be 100% focused on rather than listening while doing something else.

I do enjoy the witcher universe. And brought the audible book to check out the series. I have been recommended by it from friends and colleagues. I feel it might be the case that in future books it gets better, but I didn't really enjoy this one.

woven together wonderfuly my only criticism is it took me awhile to ground myself but I got there and it was well worth the time it took me.

Narrator

Narrator has a very monotonous, singsong voice - almost devoid of expression.
This is a shame as it spoils the audio reading of a very good story.

Great read but disappointing that the female character are written in a fairly sexist way.

This is a pretty good fantasy book but annoyingly it is fairly sexist when it comes to portraying women. The two love interests to the main character are one who acts fairly slutty and another who is a saint-like creature that has taken a vow of silence and sent to soothe him sexually. Reads like a teenage boy’s sexual fantasy. As a female it’s just irritating and puts you off. However, if I ignore that weakness of the book I can say that the author has created a fairly interesting, imaginative world.
