About this listen

Burma, 1945. Bea, Plum, Bubbles, Joy and Lucy: in search of adventure, attached to the Fourteenth Army, fighting a forgotten war in the jungle. Assigned to run a mobile canteen, navigating treacherous roads and dodging hostile gunfire, they become embroiled in life-threatening battles of their own.

Oxford, 1976. A woman slips into a museum and steals several rare Japanese netsuke, including the famed fox-girl. Despite the offer of a considerable reward, these tiny, exquisitely detailed carvings are never seen again.

London and Galway, 1999. On the eve of the new millennium, Olivia, assistant to an art dealer, meets Beatrix, an elderly widow who wishes to sell her late husband's collection of Japanese art. Olivia travels with Beatrix to a New Year's Eve party, deep in the Irish countryside, where friendships will be tested as secrets kept for more than fifty years are spilled.

Inspired by the heroic women who served in the 'forgotten war' in Burma, The Last Reunion is a heartbreaking love story and mystery by the international bestselling author of The Botanist's Daughter and The Silk House.

Critic Reviews

"This is very good commercial historical fiction, well-crafted and well-informed. It pulls no punches about wartime violence, and Kayte Nunn has some thoughtful points to make about the nature and endurance of women's friendships." (Sydney Morning Herald)

"I couldn't put it down. Fascinating. I love the empowerment that these ladies gain." (Fiona Palmer)

"Absolutely magnificent. Includes all of my favourite things: art, female friendship and courageous women discovering their true heart and soul against a backdrop of war." (Natasha Lester)

Well written story, Australian accents were terrible, but still an enjoyable tale. A harrowing time in history, but not told in a negative way, leaving the real horror of war to the imagination. This is a romantic view, without getting too soppy.

This well narrated story had me in its grips from start to finish.
Set in reality but with fictional characters.

Believably brilliant.

Loved this story of women serving close to the front line in Burma based on fact, and the fictional art mystery woven through it - from Burma to present day England. Well written m, kept me engaged.

Fascinating story of WW2 in Burma

I did read in other reviews that the accent was bad, but they are terrible and made the book hard to listen to at times.
The actual story was a nice one though

Good story…terrible accents

I enjoyed the story, it was great to give the women of the war a voice. I really struggled with the narrator though, the Australian and American accents were truly terrible. It did make it difficult to listen to as I continued to cringe throughout, but I was determined to get through it so I gritted my teeth and continued. I did enjoy the story, although it was a bit slow to start with, probably because of the narration though.

Good book, terrible accents

Beautiful story

A wonderful story, I was entranced right to the end. The only off putting aspect was the American and Australian accents, which were so wrong it would have turned me off had it not been for the story itself.

Thoroughly enjoy this story which highlights the role women played in WW2, as well as the hardships they endured.

Very enjoyable story

A wonderful story about strong young women working in horrific conditions to bringing solace to men fighting a war few know about. I had no idea that women were so close to the front line and knew very little about the fighting in Burma. This story is beautifully written and the narrator did an amazing job dealing with all the accents. I would certainly recommend this book.
