About this listen

The must-listen gothic thriller of 2021.

This is the story of a murderer. A stolen child. Revenge. This is the story of Ted, who lives with his daughter, Lauren, and his cat, Olivia, in an ordinary house at the end of an ordinary street.

All these things are true. And yet some of them are lies.

You think you know what's inside the last house on Needless Street. You think you've come across this story before. In the dark forest at the end of Needless Street, something lies buried. But it's not what you think....

Loved this book. One of my favourites recently.
The twists and turns, surprises and shocks were amazing. Just when you think you have it figured out, you really, really don't. The narration is unreal. Characters have their own personalities that are built with each voice. Very easy to find yourself lost in this story and you will have to know how it ends as quickly as possible!

Excellent! What a ride, with so many twists!

I loved the twist. it wasn't something I was expecting! I did find the performance a bit hard to follow, because it's only one person doing all voices though.

Great twist

I really enjoyed this book. Creepy, disturbing, profoundly sad and brilliant! The narrator did a 10/10 job!

This book is ambiguous and tackled bravely - and I wanted so much for it to succeed in it's endeavours. But it didn't quite make it. The twists and turns were clever, but it's obvious from early on that things are probably not what they seem to be, and I felt like I was just waiting for whatever the big twist was going to be. I wasn't lost in the story or empathetic enough with any character or story to really feel the weight of the big reveal. I'm not sure why - could be that the shocking imagery in the first half just overpowers any sweet sentiment that might endear us to anyone involved enough to feel that stomach lurch that comes with a well planned twist. Something about Ted's character made it impossible to believe that we was really the villain that he was supposed to appear to be.

BUT credit to Ward for not leaving the ending ambiguous - for taking the two hours it took beyond the first big reveal, to flesh out the "true facts" for us - the alternative narrative. I feel like too many authors leave things open these days and if Ward had chosen to do that and ended the book two hours sooner, that would have been a big cop out. So even though things weren't tied up perfectly and the book overall is too clever by half, I really admire this work. It's dark but courageous and the text has integrity because Ward never drops the ball. If I'd been triggered emotionally to join the characters on their journeys, to empathize and relate and lose myself in their depths, it would have been nearly perfect.

Too clever by half

wow... haven't come across something like this in a very very long time. went in not knowing anything about this and was blown away by the writing, story, narrator and the twists... if you are interested in a dark psychological story full of sadness and hope then buckle in and enjoy.

Amazing, Disgusting, Heartbreaking
