Whirlwind of a Horror Mystery

I felt a great mix of feelings listening to this book, confuse, fear, repulsion, wonder and understanding. IF YOU START THIS BOOK N FIND YOURSELF STRUGGLING I RECOMMEND PUSHING THROUGH, it is worth it. A psychological horror, many times twisted n seemingly confused, it was a journey that in its unique way turned out to be beautiful. If you enjoy the fear of horror n love complex characters n stories with deep, dark n beautiful meaning I suggest this book!!+ To the author I send my regards, respect n hope. 💘

Very good & out of this world

I'm not going to say anything more about this book than that it's very good. It uses story ingredients that are not unfamiliar to fans of crime fiction but it is done in a way that makes the story quite original.
There's also not much to say about the narration: it's just incredibly good.

Gripping!

I have just finished listening to this dark, mysterious and exceptionally written gothic horror and am surprised at the pure visceral feelings it has left me with. No other horror has managed to have such an effect. A dark tale perfectly read by a very talented narrator, who made each character their very own. Sadness, enlightenment and a deeper understanding of the human mind are just a little of how I feel. I don't want to discuss the plot in this review, purely because I would not want to give a single thing away. I highly recommend The Last House on Needless Street.. Catriona Ward rocks as a writer and I can't wait to read what she comes up with next. I'm off to order the book, to read this time, so I can savour every word.

Awful

I wrote my review and deleted it before this version. My first draft went in quite a bit, funnily enough that being my main complaint about this book.

To summarise. Half of the story is in the POV of a kitty monologue. Yes a cat! The last few hours keep making you think that it's about to end, but doesn't.
Cut out the kitty chat and the never ending, ending and the story may have enough about it to keep the listener from frankly past caring about any of it anymore.

Creepy, horror, psychological thriller all words listed in reviews with an additional critc from Stephen King, can only make me think I must have got a different book from everyone else.

Dull, monotonous, padded, rambling and 10+ hrs of my life I will never get back AND I'm still listening with 44mins to go. Wow.

Thrilling to return to.

I didn’t guess. The hints were there and I should have picked them up! I loved the suspense and the darkness was truly spine tingling. The narrative was clever and sensitive. I think this is a unique novel.

5 star thriller, 1 star audiobook

I loved Catriona Ward's previous work, Little Eve. This is even better. An utterly gripping dark thriller that unwinds with wonderful complexity. Ward could well be the next Gillian Flynn (although for my money Ward is the better writer) . Such a shame the audiobook version was marred by such an irritating narrator. I gave up and ordered the book.

Well-crafted creepiness

This is a book that one doesn't want to say too much about, for fear of ruining it for others. It is set in a road at the edge of a wilderness, where children once went missing. The story circles around Ted, a lonely man who lives at the end of the road, and Dee, who has moved in next door and is trying to find out what happened to her sister, who disappeared years before. This is not your average thriller, and Ward takes us on a twisted journey, where you don't know where you are from one moment to the next - until suddenly you do. It is a strange and disconcerting book, quite uncomfortable at times, but also tender and beautiful.

Dark and Utterly Delightful

The reading does every word of this brilliant novel justice. A standout book I'll never forget. It went too far for my taste at the end, but still, too good to miss. Highly recommend.

Hardworking disassociation

Narrator driven streams of consciousness plaited into a twisty tale with progressive reveals and surprises. Go with the flow as it is the journey that matters.

Gripping tale of survival in small town America.

At first I thought this was too dark but it us shot through with simple pleasures. It's a tale of survival cut through with loss. Very well narrated and the plot and style suits an audio book. Really enjoyed it.
