About this listen

Bloomsbury presents The Last Horseman by David Gilman, read by Colin Mace.

South Africa, 1900.

The search for his missing son takes Joseph Radcliffe from the streets of Dublin, smouldering with rebellion, to the trackless veld of South Africa and the bloody brutality of the Anglo-Boer War.

As a former cavalryman in the US army, Radcliffe is no stranger to war, but 800 miles north of Cape Town, under fire from Boer commandos and distrusted by the British forces, he will find his survival skills tested to the hilt.

The Last Horseman is an epic tale of heroism and treachery, love and loyalty, set against the backdrop of a conflict that shook an empire to its core.©2025 David Gilman (P)2025 Head of Zeus

Excellent

When a wonderful step up in David Gilman’s historical fiction novels. I never knew much about the circumstances of the Boer Wars and the involvement of the Irish Guards and the serious struggles of the Irish independence movement. The historical notes at the end was extremely helpful in understanding future of South Africa. Independence has a whole lot of meaning from wherever you come from. Who has a right to live anywhere and how do you establish ownership? Humanity is marred by a myriad of contradictions. I wonder what DG would make of the history of Zimbabwe and the spiral downwards after independence which has no justification whatsoever. Colonialism left its mark but I can’t think of any country that is benefiting from throwing away a whole lot of positives for multiple negatives. I am very much looking forward to the next historical novel by this first class writer. I also commend highly the excellent narrator!
