Story
Interesting Times, the 17th novel in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, finds the planet's oldest empire in the midst of bitter turmoil after the publication of the revolutionary treatise What I Did on My Holidays. Workers, with nothing to lose but their water buffaloes, are joining forces against old warlords, spreading violence throughout Discworld's ancient cities. All that stands in the way of total destruction are three decidedly non-heroic creatures.

William de Worde is the accidental editor of the Discworld's first newspaper. Now he must cope with the traditional perils of a journalist's life: people who want him dead, a recovering vampire with a suicidal fascination for flash photography, some more people who want him dead in a different way and, worst of all, the man who keeps begging him to publish pictures of his humorously shaped potatoes. William just wants to get at the truth.

Time is a resource. Everyone knows it has to be managed. And on the Discworld that is the job of the Monks of History, who store it and pump it from the places where it's wasted (like the underwater; how much time does a codfish need?) to places like cities, where there's never enough time. But the construction of the world's first truly accurate clock starts a race against, well, time for Lu Tze and his apprentice Lobsang Ludd.

Publisher's Summary
This is the Discworld's last continent, a completely separate creation.
It's hot. It's dry...very dry. There was this thing once called The Wet, which no one believes in. Practically everything that's not poisonous is venomous. But it's the best bloody place in the world, all right?
And it'll die in a few days, except.... Who is this hero striding across the red desert? Champion sheep shearer, horse rider, road warrior, beer drinker, bush ranger and someone who'll even eat a Meat Pie Floater when he's sober? A man in a hat whose luggage follows him on little legs, who's about to change history by preventing a swagman stealing a jumbuck by a billabong?
Yes...all this place has between itself and wind-blown doom is Rincewind, the inept wizard who can't even spell wizard. Still...no worries, eh?
Also, Terry Pratchett would like it to be known that The Last Continent is not a book about Australia. It's just vaguely Australian.
Please note: This is a vintage recording. The audio quality may not be up to modern day standards.

Critic Reviews
"Pratchett is the funniest parodist working in the field today, period." (The New York Review of Science Fiction)
"Terry Pratchett is simply the best humorous writer of the 20th century. Wodehouse, Waugh, Sharpe, etc. all have their merits, sometimes considerable, but Pratchett really is a cut above the rest." (Oxford Times)

Great tale from the disc
Really good book, good story (provided you can cross over with real world knowledge of Australia and you have read previous rincewind books from terry Pratchett).
Only disappointment was the fact that the audio quality leaves a lot to be desired at times with static from the original analogue recording nearly drowning the narrator

Low audio quality, but still great
I love this book, but if you aren't familiar with the Australian references, you may appreciate it less. as an Australian, very funny. This performance is solid, but audio quality is down a bit. As a minor issue, I found the Australian accents one dimensional and without variation between characters, but that just may be me being picky as an Australian. Still enjoyable and I recommend strongly.

Girt by sea but NOT about Australia
Let's be clear, Terry Pratchett did NOT write this book about Australia. It just happens to be set on a far away continent girt by sea, where it doesn't rain, bushrangers steal sheep, wear strange armour & have ballads written about them, an opera house = culture, bears drop from trees, and "no worries" is a legitimate response in just about any situation...
Needless to say, there were laughs aplenty in this tale from the Discworld. As an Aussie who grew up in the country on tales of champion shearers, bushrangers, and drop bears, I really loved all the little cultural references (not that it's about Australia!) along the way. There are just way too many to list- strewth no worries!

Well performed, but story a bit try-hard in places
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
In general, there are plenty of laughs and digs, but this book trips up the formula - poke fun at things/ideas - and ends up trying too hard to make everyone else look silly. Mr Pratchett, in this book, proves to be a mixture of politically correct romantic on the one side, and ardent rationalist on the other. I've enjoyed his books till now, and hadn't noticed this tension before, but it definitely detracted from my enjoyment, to the point where I would feel like jumping forward in the recording, just to avoid his, once again, bludgeoning to death of some idea that he obviously doesn't like. It seems far from open-minded, and I'll probably think twice before I buy another of his more recent books.
The performance is, as always, nicely done by Nigel Planer, who I could easily listen to for hours ... as I just did!
Would you recommend The Last Continent to your friends? Why or why not?
Probably not, though happily there are many other Pratchett books that I would recommend :)

It's all in the performance...
What did you like most about The Last Continent?
Terry Pratchett is a known quantity. I'm a huge fan but must admit that his earlier works appeal to me more. As a fantasy fiction devotee I found his increasingly modern allegories and focus on social commentary dissipated the escapism somewhat. Nonetheless, 'The Last Continent' is more 'old school'. Of course, the subject matter helps a great deal. (Not) Australia is practically a fantasy kingdom as it is.
However, for me, the real treasures here are the performers on Audible. Both Stephen Briggs and Nigel Planer are supreme. I've always enjoyed Tony Robinson's readings too but once you go unabridged, you can never go back. Being a child of the 80s and an avid 'Young Ones' fan I have a special affinity for Mr. Planer.
Here, as always, his characterisations are perfect; his Australian accent is consistently accurate and Rincewind has just enough 'Neil' to bring fuzzy, warm waves of nostalgia flooding back. His pacing and timing are immaculate and his textual narration has just enough colour and modulation to keep the listener's full attention.
In short, you buy the books to read Pratchett; you buy the audiobooks to experience him.

Great Book, audio quality complete rubbish!
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I wouldn't buy this book on Audible until they upgrade the audio quality. It's terrible. On the other hand the story is great and I loved Nigel Planners reading. I deleted and re-downloaded it about 4 times hoping the audio quality had been upgraded to no avail. This is the first Audible title I've listened to with bad audio quality and was surprised.
Would you be willing to try another one of Nigel Planer’s performances?

The Last Continent - so disappointed
Would you try another book written by Terry Pratchett or narrated by Nigel Planer?
Absolutely, have enjoyed most of the other books w have listened to, this one, apart from the odd one liners was a real disappointment, realy not sure why it was written
Has The Last Continent put you off other books in this genre?
no, but if the next few are no better then perhaps.
What about Nigel Planer’s performance did you like?
Good performance, quality of the recording really poor also so it was almost uncomfortable to listen to
If this book were a film would you go see it?
no
Any additional comments?
have really got into the disc world books, love all the characters, this book did not seem to have a purpose, felt like something to fill a gap, poorly, disappointed with mr Pratchett for this one

Another pleasure to listen too!!
I have read and listened to over 20 of Terry Pratchett's books now and as ever "The Last Continent" does miss the mark. Probably up there with my top 3 favourite Pratchett novels so far! Full of Whitt, imagination and creativity not to mention it had me in stitches many a time. Very enjoyable and I would highly recommend it!

The very best Discworld book !!
Lots of great humour and the usual side splitting fun from Terry. Great send up of the Auzzie lifestyle.
