About this listen

Following the enormous success of 2004 bestseller and critics' favorite Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Susanna Clarke delivers a delicious collection of ten stories set in the same fairy-crossed world of 19th-century England. With Clarke's characteristic historical detail and diction, these dark, enchanting tales unfold in a slightly distorted version of our own world, where people are bedeviled by mischievous interventions from the fairies. With appearances from beloved characters from her novel, including Jonathan Strange and Childermass, and an entirely new spin on certain historical figures, including Mary, Queen of Scots, this is a must-have for fans of Susanna Clarke and an enticing introduction to her work for new listeners.

This is book of short stories set in the same alternative history world as Jonathan Strange. Each story is a very imaginative adult fable. This author’s stories are so rich and enjoyable! Unfortunately the narrators were difficult to listen to - they were a little boring and I kept falling asleep or drifting away with my thoughts and having to rewind 15 or 29 mins. Sometimes I listened to the same section 4 times before I actually heard it and it took real discipline to make myself stay tuned in to their voices. I wish I’d bought the book of this instead.

My goodness Susanna Clarke verbalizes the English dictionary with such beautiful intention.
These are short fascinating tales to tantalize your dendrites with soothing fingertips.
Susanna Clarke you produce collections of words with terrifying temerity, thank you.
While Davina Porter and Simon Prebble narrated with purpose for pleasure.
Much appreciated. :-)

Thrillingly enjoyable

I only purchased because Davina was narrating. I guess the story was supposed to be fanciful - I just couldn't get into it.
