Publisher's Summary

A ranger’s duty. The rotten heart of a king. Rebellion spilled from the blood of family.

Rew, the king’s ranger, accepted a role on the far edge of the realm to avoid the morass of intrigue and betrayal that bleeds from the heart of the kingdom. His only desire is to shoulder the burden he’s taken, to protect the village of Eastwatch, and to monitor the wilderness beyond.

When three youths are arrested for petty theft in the village and beg for his help, Rew’s oldest friend insists he take responsibility for them. By ties stronger than steel, Rew is forced onto a path he knows leads to chaos and death. Through a resurgence of monsters summoned in ages prior, war between the royal line, and back-stabbing treachery, the king’s ranger will battle to grant the youths a life he never had a chance of.

But as they venture farther from the wilderness he calls home, Rew can feel the magical pull at the center of the kingdom, demanding he return to face his past and his family’s terrible legacy. Only he knows the secret of the king, and the risk it poses to the entire realm.

The King’s Ranger is a classic fantasy adventure, perfect for fans of Michael J Sullivan, Brent Weeks, James Islington, and AC Cobble’s Benjamin Ashwood series.

Not worth the time or credit

Let's start by saying this is a cookie cutter hero story where he's found by children then hero saves the day. As I go more in-depth they will be spoilers not that anyone couldn't predict these but just as a warning.

The main character is a Ranger who seems to be hiding from something, so he goes to the farthest reach of the Kingdom to stay out of the court politics. He's then approached by three young adults that he keeps referring to as children but even in Medieval and modern times these would be fully grown adult as they are all 18 years old. This Ranger who wants to stay out of all this problem now gets roped into it all because he wants to save these young adults from themselves, so you agree to take them back home and gets one of his own Ranger's killed. Once he's back in their home he gets dragged into the political intrigue and decides that he must save them from themselves. Fast forward to the end where as you expected he would save them and he does, then one of the "children" or young adults runs off because he feels he needs to try and save his father and what does the Ranger do, you guessed it, he goes after them so then you have book 2.
This was such a waste of time I couldn't even say anything good about the book. The only good thing was that the narrator was Simon Vance. He brought life into this dead story where there are so many holes and so many areas where the Ranger could have left well enough alone, but he felt like he had to save some young adults from themselves even when they're proven time and time again to be the ones causing the problems in the story.

Final thoughts on this is that it's a one star book, but if they bundle it as a series where you get the entire series for one credit and you just have nothing else to listen to and have a lot of time give it a whirl. Apart from that, save your credit for something more worthy.

Ranger Fantasy

The plot line is generally similar to high fantasy adventure stories, but there is good world building and creative plot devices to keep the story interesting. The narration is good, creating a smooth flow to the story line. Characters have little depth but are likeable. it is worth your time.

Good Story, Interesting Characters, Well Acted

When I purchased this book, I assumed I knew how this story would go. I was wrong. It’s not as cliche as I assumed it would be, but took to a direction I really enjoyed. The main character, Rew, is the standard, mature, deep, and silent tough-guy that one would expect from a character type like this. But the story takes a left turn as you get to know more about Rew. It makes for an interesting story.

As always, Simon Vance does an excellent job telling the story. He’s a fantastic story-teller and brings it to life.

I recommend this book to anyone considering adding it to their collection.

a outstanding fantasy novel... this will be fun

I've read so many fantasies in my lifetime it's always hard to find something that is fresh and new and this certainly is. it's a great first effort in a series I really look forward to the second it has lots of elements that we've all read before but the story is interesting and complex and the performance was good... I look forward to the second book in the series
