Publisher's Summary

The Key to Rebecca is a gripping thriller set during the Second World War, from the author of Eye of the Needle, Ken Follett.

'Our spy in Cairo is the greatest hero of them all...' (Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, September 1942)

He is known to the Germans as 'Sphinx', to others as Alex Wolff, a European businessman. He arrives suddenly in Cairo from out of the desert, armed with a radio set, a lethal blade and a copy of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca - a ruthless man with a burning, relentless conviction that he will win at all costs.

The stakes are high, for the survival of the British campaign in North Africa is in the balance. Only Major William Vandam, an intelligence officer, and the beautiful courtesan Elene can put an end to Wolff's brilliant clandestine reports of British troop movements and strategic plans.

As Rommel's troops come closer to victory, Vandam edges nearer to Wolff and the crucial key. Follett builds tension and suspense to a nerve-tearing pitch as he follows the adversaries across the infernal desert to a confrontation which will determine who wins - and loses - in this deathly struggle.

Excellent narration!

I thought this narrator was the best narrator I have listened to on any audiobook. You can tell the quality even from the sample. An absolute pleasure to listen to! The story was pretty good - perhaps faded a bit towards the end and went on too long, but the first 2/3 were great.

Interesting and enjoyable but somewhat contrived

Thoroughly enjoyed this book as it was about a period in history about which I knew little! The plot a little contrived in places but still a good read with excellent narration!

The key to Rebecca

The key to Rebecca is my first book by Ken Follett, but not my last... It is a most excellent listen, and brilliantly narrated, full of action, drama, and suspense.

If you want war time Cairo then this is where you will find it!

A thoroughly enjoyable story, a real page turner. I love the way Follett takes a major historical episode and weaves an exciting and imaginative ‘what if’ espionage story.

Not Ken Follet's best but....

A pretty engrossing read anyway. The usual super-suave demonic baddie with a knife up his sleeve is not the best feature. The sex scenes are pretty painful but anyway an intriguing plot. I wasn't very keen on the reader...a bit lightweight.

Follett fan - still good but not his best.

Less intricate detail about the country, war, culture and character than I'm used to with Follett. More of a love story..trails off at the end. Not as clever links with the characters as others.
Still worth a listen and a good performance.
