Publisher's Summary

An enchanting novel about fate, second chances, and hope, lost and found, by the Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Last of the Moon Girls.

Soline Roussel is well schooled in the business of happy endings. For generations her family has kept an exclusive bridal salon in Paris, where magic is worked with needle and thread. It’s said that the bride who wears a Roussel gown is guaranteed a lifetime of joy. But devastating losses during World War II leave Soline’s world and heart in ruins and her faith in love shaken. She boxes up her memories, stowing them away, along with her broken dreams, determined to forget.

Decades later, while coping with her own tragic loss, aspiring gallery owner Rory Grant leases Soline’s old property and discovers a box containing letters and a vintage wedding dress, never worn. When Rory returns the mementos, an unlikely friendship develops, and eerie parallels in Rory’s and Soline’s lives begin to surface. It’s clear that they were destined to meet - and that Rory may hold the key to righting a forty-year wrong and opening the door to shared healing and, perhaps, a little magic.

Beautiful story

I really loved the story and the characters but the narrative of the French woman was a bit too much for me. It was hard to understand, as well.
There was a couple times where I could tell someone completely we Lu different was narrating for Rory which almost lost my interest in the character because they were not very good.
While I appreciated the different voice narratives I don’t think it was necessary.
All and all I the story itself was very good.

Too long and convoluted

The book starts well, with the story of Soline in France and her exit to Newport where she meets her fiancé and gets evicted. The plot becomes more complicated when she gives birth to a girl who is adopted by a well known Boston family. Soline is unaware that her baby was alive and not stillborn.
To make things even improbable, Soline befriends Rory who turns out to be her granddaughter. And her fiancé is alive.
There are interesting passages, but they are lost in repetitions, and melodramatic scenes.
Finally, I hated the performance of the reader interpreting Soline. I found the French accent atrocious.

Delightful story, magnificent narration

Though the story was a touch predictable, there were a few surprises.
As a custom wedding dressmaker myself, I appreciated the detail that went into the description of The Work very much. Clearly the author either sews herself, or was as diligent with this aspect of her research as she was with her historical research.
I was so happy to hear such good French accents from both narrators, and they both managed to voice the other characters to great effect.
As Audible listeners know, the narration makes or breaks an experience. This one totally made it for me.
I will be looking for more of their work as well as that of the author’s.

Wonderful Story

I absolutely loved it from beginning to end! Although the Feench accent was sometimes a little difficult to understand, it added to the story.
