Unbending in their opposition, her parents push her into a loveless engagement with a Russian count.

Valentina struggles for independence and to protect her young sister from the tumult sweeping the city, as Russia is bound for rebellion. The Tsar, the Duma and the Bolsheviks are at each other's throats and Valentina is forced to make a choice that changes her life for ever...

The Jewel of St Petersburg

Would you try another book from Kate Furnivall and/or Jilly Bond?

No

What didn’t you like about Jilly Bond’s performance?

Jilly Bond has an annoying "little girl" voice which took all the enjoyment out of the story and her attempts at the male voice were grating to say the least.

Historical Romance

An interesting bit of history told from a new point of view. The idea of showing the revolution unfold from a reasonably ignorant point of view was interesting, but be aware the romance takes over the plot. The love lies of the characters is very detailed, not my particular cup of tea. Bond has some really odd ways of speaking - not sure why Russian peasants have West Country accents! Also, she adds strange emphasis to certain words which twist the meaning from how I think it was intended. This is most noticeable in how she repeatedly over stresses Val-en-Tin-a and was most irritating in the very last time of the book!
