Publisher's Summary

Secretly treasured memories of her eccentric grandmother’s Tuscan house are very special for Carrie Stowe; for not only do they recall the happy childhood summers before the Great War, they are her only escape from the suffocating routine of her life with Arthur, her repressive husband.

When she unexpectedly inherits the house, Arthur, predictably, insists it be sold. But while disposing of the effects, Carrie is drawn to an enigmatic young man embarked on an ideological quest….

Intriguing plot, well read

This is the only book at Audible by Teresa Crane, and I hope there will be more. It will not be satisfying for those who are squeamish about incest or emotional manipulation in relationships, or who are expecting more intrigue and less history and geography. However, the primary character is presented sympathetically, even though by today's standards, she is naive. If you appreciate the constraints placed on middle-class women in England in the early 1920's, you will find the protagonist's psychological needs compelling, and you will understand how she is drawn into two mysteries she faces.

Excellent book, excellent narration

This is one of the best books I’ve listened to on audio. Full of imagery, suspense, romance, mystery. It has it all. A great way to spend the hours relaxing while chewing your nails in suspense!

Beautifully told story

I loved the style of writing and the reader is and absolute joy to listen to. Both the reader and the script painted such a vivid picture that I could almost feel the heat of the sun and smell the earth in the air. As with all good novels it's a shame the story had to end.

Very enjoyable

This was a recommendation on Amazon of an author new to me. What a gem. After a couple of chapters I was hooked! Story had many facets and the plot was skilfully revealed. The narrator defined each character clearly and sympathetically.

Enjoyable but ran out of steam. Excellent narrator

Reasonably compelling to around the mid point, but became predictable and a bit monotonous. Replacing a good portion of sexual content with some more storyline would have made this a lot more interesting.
