You don't fall in love in Cyprus in the summer of 1974. Not here, not now.

In 1974, two teenagers, from opposite sides of a divided Cyprus, meet at a tavern in the city they both call home. The tavern is the only place that Kostas, who is Greek, and Defne who is Turkish, can meet in secret, hidden beneath the leaves of a fig tree growing through the roof of the tavern. This tree will witness their hushed happy meetings, and will be there when the war breaks out and the teenagers vanish.

Decades later in north London, sixteen-year-old Ada has never visited the island where her parents were born. She seeks to untangle years of her family's silence, but the only connection she has to the land of her ancestors Is a fig tree growing tin the garden of their home . . .

This book is written in such beautiful language. Evocative and entertaining at the same time, a true page turner, it is also a powerful testimony of war, love, human nature and the mysteries of the natural world.
10 out of 10!

Poetic, inspiring and informative

My mother was a Greek Cypriot and my father an Australian UN peacekeeper stationed in Cyprus for a year in 1965-66 so many of the themes beautifully explored in this book struck a chord with me. The writing is evocative, and to me, captured the nature of the Cypriot people and landscapes beautifully and the turbulence of the unrest and the impact on the Cypriots. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the narration by the fig tree to start, but ended up loving it. The only thing that I didn’t really like was the narration. I found it a little too sickly sweet, a little bit ‘Enid Blyton’. Some of the accented words occasionally seemed to sound a bit Irish. No matter, I still loved it.

Loved it for many reasons

Weaving in and through the Turkish and Greek cultures and then the perspective of the western 2000+ slant, then looking to the heart of people made this story come alive!
