Publisher's Summary
In the vein of The Time Traveler's Wife and Life After Life, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is New York Times best-selling author V. E. Schwab's genre-defying tour de force.
When Addie La Rue makes a pact with the devil, she trades her soul for immortality. But there's always a price - the devil takes away her place in the world, cursing her to be forgotten by everyone. Addie flees her tiny home town in 18th-century France, beginning a journey that takes her across the world, learning to live a life where no one remembers her and everything she owns is lost and broken. Existing only as a muse, she learns to fall in love anew every single day. Until one day, in a second-hand bookshop in Manhattan, Addie meets someone who remembers her. Suddenly thrust back into a real, normal life, Addie realises she can't escape her fate forever.

Nice idea, average execution
One of the characters is 300 years old and yet we are expected to believe that she is happy to hook up with someone who is, what, 22? This is at the heart of my problems with this book - I was never remotely convinced by the characters. 300 years old and still behaving the same as she did when she was a teenager? The plot was okay and the ending was better than it could have been, but I always felt at a critical distance from everyone in the story. The narration was fine as long as you don’t mind American accents.

Well written mediocre story
If you like Emily in Paris this is the book for you. This book feels like it was only written for one audience in mind RWL. I found myself wondering what was the point of this story? Nothing really happened and no one made progress and there are a lot of questionable life choices. Everyone was unlikeable expect the narrator.
The author took 10 years the write this book and I can see it is quite dated and feel like it belongs in the early 2010s when being an NLOG (not like other girls) was still cool. If you like stories with no real purpose but to idealise the Main Character this is the book for you.

Phenomenal!
Wow! Wow, wow, wow! That was incredible.
So, very basic gist: Addie is a girl on the cusp of womanhood, living in rural France and 🎵She wants much more than this provincial life🎵. Until she meets sad book boy who is sad and bookish. But here’s the kicker: she sold her soul to the darkness 300 years earlier. Oops 😬
If my brief, sarcastic synopsis isn’t enough to make you order this book immediately, perhaps this next sentence will. This is one of the most rich, beautiful, tragic, hopeful and poignant books I’ve ever listened to.
I’m so glad I chose to listen to the audiobook rather than read the physical book. The simple pleasure of having this beautiful tale read to me made my heart sing. Julia Whelan, the narrator, did a phenomenal job. Her voice was so soothing (side note: don’t listen in bed just before going to sleep) - this was the best way to relax.
This is definitely a story I will listen to again.

In parts brilliant; in others, underwhelming.
The premise of this book is quite original however the pace is pretty slow. It’s enjoyable enough but it never left me wanting more, to keep reading/listening for just one more chapter. Each time I was content to “put it down”. I didn’t wish the book kept going at the end. I wasn’t wondering about what comes next for the characters. The ending (part 7) on the whole felt predictable and cliched and... akin to a kid’s story when the ending is “they woke up and it was just a dream”.
The narration, however, was excellent.

Books are made of words, words that if in the write order can make us feel things. Make us understand. I haven’t met many people masters of the art of writing as great as V.E. Schwab.
Books like this give me hope that the art of writing will never fail to move me.

Intriguing, unique but over long
I read this on a recommendation by someone who loves the author. My immediate impression was it was intriguing and unique. The story had many possibilities and there were lots of clues as to where it could go. I enjoyed the world of Addie’s thoughts and hopes, and I felt her emotions with her. She is a lovely character.
However once I got the idea; the story hook - it then felt drawn out and I was willing it to conclude, nothing new was coming up and I just wanted to know how it ended. I even speeded it up, something I have never done before on a audio book.
If you are looking for something different then this is a good read, the writing style is very mesmerising and there are some good references to the arts, history and folklore which give the story good bulk. It just felt very drawn out.

If only I hadl cried. I would've wept an ocean.
A Poignantly Beautiful story and so beautifully narrated and brought to life by Julia Whelan. I cannot stress enough how much I loved listening to this story. It was possessive, obsessive, destructive, passionate, heartbreakingly sad and heartwrenchingly tragic. I couldn't stop listening to this story, I couldn't help hoping against hope for the outcome I so wanted. This is not a story of good against evil but a story of temptation and hope when you are at your absolute last grasp of life. It's a story, No. It's a lifetime's saga of a choice once made in desperation and the indelible affect it has on a Soul.
