The sound effects & music weirded me out.

I listen to an audio book to have someone basically read me the story. I liked the story and narration but found the use of sound effects (like gunfire) and music off putting.

great story

I did love the story, but I feel like it was let down a bit by the performance. They really could have done without yhe cheesy and distracting back up music that failed to create atmosphere. The narrators were ok, but a bit flat. I admit I am easily put off by things like that though, and apart from those points I did enjoy the story

Why the music?!

While I love all the David Baldacci books, I cannot understand why on earth they thought music would be required to add to the story. David is an accomplished writer. No background, theme music required! Also why there was a female voice to do the female voices really irritated. So so American. The narrator should be talented enough to portray the story with his/her voice only. Will be sticking with UK read books from now on.

Will Robie is an exciting character.

David Baldacci wrote a good story in this genre. Will Robie is exciting and interesting and I look forward to hearing his further exploits. I am not sure if Ron McLarty has the right voice for this character but I believe he reads well. Orlagh Cassidy's voice is matched to her character much better. Similar to other audiobooks by this company the use of background music to try and heighten the tension and mood should not be necessary and often spoils the performance.

A brilliant imagination for this book

Thoroughly enjoyed this book as I have done with most of David Baldacci books, he has a great imagination. For my money Ron McLarty is one of the best narrators and i think whether you enjoy the audio books regardless of the storyline has a lot to do with the narrator. The world would be a much better place if there were a few more Will Robies in it, there is nothing he cant do.

enjoyable listen if a bit farfetched

enjoyable but not earthshattering listen. The story is a bit unbelievable due to the convoluted nature and implausible link-ups. The narrator does seem older than the protagonist, is this a problem? maybe not.

Sound Effects?

My first reaction was that Ron McLarty’s voice didn’t match Will Robie’s age. Sounded much older than Robie’s 40 years. I also found the unexpected music and sound effects detracted from the oration. Was this because the performances lacked the light and shade needed to convey the intensity of the situation?
