About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of The Infinite Sea, the second book in the phenomenal 5th Wave series by Carnegie-shortlisted author Rick Yancey.

For Cassie Sullivan and the rest of Earth's remaining human survivors, the situation was already desperate when the 5th Wave hit. It's about to get worse. No one yet knows the depths to which Earth's conquerors - the Others - will sink in order to rid the Earth of the human infestation, nor have they guessed the heights to which the human spirit can reach.

Characters introduced in book one will come to the fore - and others will face the ultimate test.

I'm not sure if these books will be a trilogy (or if there will be more) but this one felt like it was doing a lot of building up to the next book. Not only that, but it was very confusing. The author seemed to be reneging on a lot of the things established in the first book. Maybe these will be explained in the next book, but I was left frustrated and as if I wasn't getting it. I also struggled with the narration from the new characters, as I felt Cassies narration was much better. Anyway, after reading the next book, this one might make more sense. Until then, I'm not sure...

Middle book syndrome...

Middle books of a trilogy usually have a type - no beginning and no end is hard to really nail. Rick Yancey manages it though - it's like this whole series was written as a whole then broken up. This just feels like the second act of a larger novel. I loved it. Again the performance was great - Pheobe is great as Cassie and Ringer. No Brandon this time but Ben sounds so much like him that it didn't change Zombie and Evan's voice all that much. All in all, I continued to love this story and the narration.

The middle book... no syndrome
