About this listen

Sal used to know his place with his adoptive gay father, their loving Mexican American family, and his best friend, Samantha. But it's senior year, and suddenly Sal is throwing punches, questioning everything, and realizing he no longer knows himself. If Sal's not who he thought he was, who is he?

This humor-infused, warmly humane look at universal questions of belonging is a triumph.

Critic Reviews

"Friendships, family, grief, joy, rage, faith, doubt, poetry, and love - this complex and sensitive book has room for every aspect of growing up!" (Margarita Engle, Newbery Honor-winning author of The Surrender Tree)
"Narrator Robbie Daymond's soft, calming tone is appropriate for the peaceful world of 17-year-old Sal.... Daymond's narration, though low-key, gives rounded portraits of all the story's characters and doesn't minimize Sal's heartache or his attempts to control his temper." ( AudioFile)

The novel is exactly what you would expect from Benjamin, classic sweet young male protagonist, with a supportive family. It's a lovely touch in a world where those families aren't commonly portrayed in writing.

Sam, the character was a tad annoying, I found her to be intrusive and a nagging tug away from the plot, but never the less, everyone has some kind of downfall.

The story is written in a poetic motion, and I found the short, cryptic chapters the most enticing. But the imagery was on point the whole way through.

Wonderful Book, I believe it lives up to Aristotle and Dante.

P.S. as a gay male, it's lovely to have a story involving gay characters that isn't about AIDS or Coming Out Dramas. Truly Refreshing.

narrator was wonderful, incredible and distinctive

Defines the love, truth, and meaning of what it truly feels like to belong, and be unconditionally loved by our family, even if they're our chosen ones.
A beautifully woven and concisely descriptive narrative of a time stamped "family portrait" of a few seasons of their lives, colourfully and creatively articulated with great wit and an admirable amount of cultural respect.
A story shared with an original heartfelt narrative of a an American-Mexican family and friends with intersectionalities of homosexuality, family violence, AOD use, sexual assault, adoption, love, grief and loss, along u with the search for "meaning" told through the lens of a 17 year old senior high school student, so raw
