Story
Part provocateur, part seducer, this young gay man’s account of life offers one of the freshest takes on Australia and the world today. Honouring poets of the past–Jean Genet, Veronica Franco, Euripedes, Hunter S. Thompson, Oscar Wilde–and joining in their task of finding meaning in existence and the modern world, Tolcher has produced a brazenly honest debut without precedent.

Story
Isaac, a young Australian photographer, is travelling through Europe. His whole life he has longed for the sophistication and wealth of the Europe of his father’s stories, the Europe at the centre of civilisation and culture. But behind the facade of a unified and globalised contemporary society, he finds a history blasted wasteland, a place forever condemned by the ghosts of its unspeakable past. Dead Europe is an unsettling ghost story about blood lust, blood libel, and blood revenge.

A support group finds solace in a world without men. With her trademark humor, energy, and flair, McKay offers glimpses of places where dreams subsume reality, where childhood restarts, where humans embrace their animal selves and animals talk like humans.

Story
Most of us have done our time in the retail trenches, but service stations are undoubtedly the frontline, as Melburnian David Goodwin found out when he started working the weekend graveyard shift at his local servo. From his very first night shift, David absorbed a consistent level of mind-bending lunacy, encountering everything from giant shoplifting bees and balaclava-clad goons hurling cordial-filled water bombs from the sunroof of their BMW, to anarcho-goths high on MDMA releasing large rats into the store from their matching Harry Potter backpacks.

Publisher's Summary
No life is simple, and no life is without sorrow. No life is perfect.
Two middle-aged men meet on an internet date. Each has been scarred by a previous relationship; each has his own compelling reasons for giving up on the idea of finding love.
But still they both turn up for the dinner, feel the spark and the possibility of something more.
Feel the fear of failing again, of being hurt and humiliated and further annihilated by love.
How can they take the risk of falling in love again. How can they not?

Echos of all of us
Superb story of love in middle age. Of baggage from past wounds forming the basis for new bonds, of leaving behind and setting one’s sights on a fresh start, wounds and all. A sensitive portrayal of bisexuality, where it can be one thing and another. A story of our generation’s fears and now strange prejudice from an earlier age. Very true. Superbly written. I think we could all find elements of our own lives in this tale. Tsiolkas writes cunningly for us all to catch glimpses of ourselves no matter who we are.

Stick with this
I was initially shocked at the voice of the narrator, it sounded like he had a bad cold and was mumbling fast but I’m glad I stuck with it. By the end I was enjoying his voice.
Loved the portrayal of the relationships in this book.

Wonderfully observant tale of humans seeking connection and commitment to love. Loved the cross cultural commentary too.
The narration was very hard to enjoy. The voice actor sounded as if they were recording while gargling on water. Very strange sound to publish - I stuck with it as the story was so compelling.

a wonderful human book - characters with scars, desires, hopes, regrets, navigating a very believable world
This was a very moving and raw story with many layers. Tsiolkas lays so much bare and reveals a deep compassionate humanity in the way he writes about the body, senses, emotions.

Couldn’t hear it
I love Christos Tsiolkas books but the narration was horrible in that it was near impossible to hear, very fuzzy and mumbled, maybe the recording was bad? Shame because I was really trying to enjoy this book but I couldn’t continue.
