About this listen
Rosa Hyde is the daughter of a time traveller, stuck in the year 1945, forced to live through it again and again. The same bulletins, the same bombs, the same raucous victory celebrations. At last she breaks out and falls through time, slipping from one century to another - and she is not alone.
Wandering with her is Tommy Rust, time gypsy and daredevil, certain in the depths of his being that he will live forever. Their journeys take them from the ancient shores of forming continents to the bright lights of future cities. They tell themselves that they need no home, that they are anything but lost....

"A gothic road novel...the pace is well-handled throughout. This is the territory of Jungian archetypes, or the Seven Basic Plots, but the old ones are the good ones." ( Guardian)
"What all the best fiction should be; something rich and strange." (Marcus Sedgwick)
The poetic style of writing, and the descriptions of the times and places visited by Rosa were incredible. I found it easy to picture the scenes in my mind. The concept of time travel on which the story is premised is exciting and has great promise, but Rosa was a disappointment. I couldn't warm to her character and, on reflection, feel that the story could have had more depth had it been based around Tommy or even Harding as the main character.
The first two thirds of the book is engaging and there is a real sense of building momentum, but the last third seems to fizzle out and the story becomes fairly morose and depressing.
Great narration by Anna Parker-Naples who has a warm voice and calm delivery.
