Publisher's Summary

September 1356. Poitiers. The greatest knights of the age were ready to give battle. On the English side, Edward, the Black Prince, who'd earned his spurs at Crecy. On the French side, the King and his son, the Dauphin. With 12,000 knights.

And then there is William Gold. A cook's boy who had once been branded as a thief. William dreams of being a knight, but in this savage new world of intrigue, betrayal and greed, first he must learn to survive. As rapacious English mercenaries plunder a country already ravaged by plague and the peasantry take violent revenge against the French knights who have failed to protect them, is chivalry any more than a boyish fantasy?

A good tale

A good tale name dropping some of the better known of the medival era. A good start for the first book in a series with lots happening. I wonder what's left for the following volumes.

Entertaining

Good story well told. Lead character as the narrator is an excellent vehicle for the tale. Look forward to hearing more of the tale.

Well worth your time

I learned an enormous amount about the Hundred Years' War. At the same time, it's a well-written, engaging story with a likeable hero who you start rooting for almost immediately. I am told that the descriptions of fighting are accurate. There are occasional slight irritations with narration - pauses that are a little too long, accents that don't seem to match the character as written (I'm thinking of Fiore) - but on the whole the narration is very well done.
It's pretty clear that most of Europe was a terrible mess during this time and that the gulf between the rich and poor was enormous. It also seems that there was some social mobility, although not clear how much.
Highly recommended, especially if you like adventure as well as history.

A-mazing

Alot of an audio book quality is the reader (who was excellent), but Cameron has made the list of authors I read. I will probably stick with his historical fiction, but I like his style!

Ill Made Knight - Well Made Story

I love these type of stories; middle ages, commoner becomes a great warrior, weave in some history. What I really enjoyed about this series so far is that our hero did not rise from being a cook to becoming a world class knight in the span of a few hundred pages. I appreciate the pacing, taking the long road to achieve renown. I find the story breathes better than others of a similar genre. I am two books in, look forward to the rest!

Good historical fiction

Good 14th century fictional tale surrounding the battle of Poitiers and the 100 years war. Many likeable characters. The narrator has a good voice but the audio seemed to have longer than normal pauses at times, a little distracting.

Hooked

I thoroughly enjoyed this tale spun by Christian Cameron. A wonderful story with ups and downs and I enjoyed every point in it. Well told, in a perspective I found refreshing. If you love history I highly recommend this novel, Cameron does his research. I have pushed the rest of this series to the top of my reading list.

Must read if you are interested Miedival stories

This book as well as the rest of this series is amazing. One of the very few series I have re read more than 3 times and counting.

I absolutely love the narrator's accents and how he puts strong emotion into his reading.

My only gripe is that they did not use the same narrator for books 3 & 4. While the narrator for books 3 & 4 is not terrible, I believe it to be a big step down, particularly because of how he pronounces certain things, who in the world pronounces Juan as Jew-on.

wow...

I've completely wasted far too many 5-star ratings on so many lesser books. recalibrating my scale, if those were 5 stars, this be a ten!
thank you Mr. Cameron, for this epically told (and beautifully narrated) story. I'm off to the next one now!

Outstanding

Superb story, interestingly set in a “fireside” tale style. Plenty of detail for history buffs and a great tale woven into this too. Very good narration, I highly recommend this ripping tale.

Snooze fest

tried as hard as i could.
I find the series boring, and the narration poor.
And silly me kept hoping it was building into an epic.
Unfortunately it was not.
Gave up on the third book.

A 20 hour monologue

I finally got through this novel. I found it to be tedious and repetitive. I feel that the producers used the wrong narrator.

Not for me

The story is a narration from start to finish, with the main character telling his life story to a man in a pub. I didn't like the way it was written, although others might. Some contradictions that annoyed me, one minute he is the smallest in the army next he is 6ft tall, which for those times would have been very tall. He is also 40 years old when telling the story and he keeps repeating that he is extremely old, 40 would have been past middle age for the time but it was no means old, lots of men were still fighting at this age and older in those days.
