Return to the dark underbelly of Ardnakelty in the thrilling new sequel to The Searcher.

It’s a blazing summer when two men arrive in the village. They’re coming for gold. What they bring is trouble.

Two years have passed since retired Police Detective Cal Hooper moved from Chicago to the West of Ireland looking for peace. He’s found it, more or less – in his relationship with local woman Lena, and the bond he’s formed with half-wild teenager Trey. So when two men turn up with a money-making scheme to find gold in the townland, Cal gets ready to do whatever it takes to protect Trey. Because one of the men is no stranger: he’s Trey’s father.

But Trey doesn’t want protecting. What she wants is revenge.

Crackling with tension and slow-burn suspense, The Hunter explores what we’ll do for our loved ones, what we’ll do for revenge, and what we sacrifice when the two collide, from the Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller Tana French.

'A richly told tale of tangled loyalties. French ratchets up the tension in increments . . . By the end, these characters have taken on such solidity that, long after finishing it, I often catch myself wondering how they’re doing – a testament to the author’s mastery of her craft' GUARDIAN

A very absorbing and gripping story, superbly narrated. I could listen to it all over again, which is very unusual for me.

Superb Story

Atmospheric, secrets & a young teen's growing bond with a retired cop, Cal Hooper, from Chicago, who has relocated to a northern, mountainous Irish community over two years ago, forms the core to this well written plot.
Cal has settled in, becomes engaged to a local lass enjoys his new Irish friends. But the teen girl's family has issues...a brother, Brendan, disappeared in French's first book, The Searcher, which brought his younger sister, Tray, looking to Cal for help.
This book, The Hunter, introduces her mysterious and missing father, Johnny, to the series. He brings an English guy to town, and both talk about gold in 'them there hills'...but is there an alterior motive?
Of course Cal gets involved, observing & listening...he and his romantic interest are protective of Tray, and she to them...stability and security...even though her mother, Sheila, and younger siblings who live in the mountains, are doing the best they can on the breadline.
There are comical cultural comments all throughout this Irish plot....which, along with the great narration & accents, truly lifts the characterisation, suspense, events & plotline.

Moody Ireland & undercurrents

Love the Irish dialogue and their ways of looking at situations taking into account the consequences of their actions -until an outsider interferes.

Irish humour is standout.
