Story
Though the tyrant rajah she was forced to marry is dead, Kalinda's troubles are far from over. A warlord has invaded the imperial city, and now she's in exile. But she isn't alone. Kalinda has the allegiance of Captain Deven Naik, her guard and beloved, imprisoned for treason and stripped of command. With the empire at war, their best hope is to find Prince Ashwin, the rajah's son, who has promised Deven's freedom on one condition: that Kalinda will fight and defeat three formidable opponents.

Story
Kalinda has brought peace to the Tarachand Empire, at least for now. Bhutas no longer need to hide their gifts. The last of the rebels have been banished. And Prince Ashwin is set to take over as rajah. But for Kalinda, this came at a great loss. Her childhood home. Her best friend. The love of her life. Deven is still trapped in the Void, though he is able to find his way to Kalinda each night. He has been lucky so far—mortals are not meant to last in the Void for long, and Deven has lasted longer than most. But when he doesn’t visit one night, Kalinda knows that his luck has run out.

Top 100 Slytherin romance
- By Kindle Customer on 07-07-2020
Publisher's Summary
In Emily R. King's thrilling fantasy debut, an orphan girl blossoms into a warrior, summoning courage and confidence in her fearless quest to upend tradition, overthrow an empire, and reclaim her life as her own.
As an orphan ward of the Sisterhood in the ancient Tarachand Empire, eighteen-year-old Kalinda is destined for nothing more than a life of seclusion and prayer. Plagued by fevers, she's an unlikely candidate for even a servant's position, let alone a courtesan or wife. Her sole dream is to continue living in peace in the Sisterhood's mountain temple.
But a visit from the tyrant Rajah Tarek disrupts Kalinda's life. Within hours, she is ripped from the comfort of her home, set on a desert trek, and ordered to fight for her place among the rajah's ninety-nine wives and numerous courtesans. Her only solace comes in the company of her guard, the stoic but kind Captain Deven Naik.
Faced with the danger of a tournament to the death - and her growing affection for Deven - Kalinda has only one hope for escape, and it lies in an arcane, forbidden power buried within her.

Interesting but predictable
I enjoyed the story line but the romance side of it was to cringy and predictable, the main story was great. It was also a wee bit childish, this book would have suited to be written in for an older read.

Enthralling
Loved this book - was the best fantasy story I’ve read in a long time. The author set the story up well and it evolved at a lovely pace. I loved the growth of the main character and the story behind the different factions. I even shed a tear at the end as it came to an emotional conclusion. I can’t wait to delve into book 2!

****Unputdownable, Amazing****
Emely R King style of writing reminds me of Sarah J Maas throne of glass series. It's a fantastical journey into a world dominated by men and women are either slaves, claimed wives or courtesan. It's a gripping fast paced story of a young girl trying to survive in a dangerous court of a cruel and corrupt Raja. I can't get enough and the five star rating I have is well deserved. Lauren Ezzo is brilliant in her narrative as Kalinda but I would have liked to have a separate male narrator.

A mix of religion, politics, and magic
In this novel, The Hundredth Queen, we follow a young orphan raised in a temple that resembles a nunnery in our world. She is chosen to take the position of the sacred 100th Queen of the ruler.
Though I found the book interesting in some parts, there were also parts that annoyed me. For example: #1.all the women who were considered "Beautiful" were described as being small and petite. #2. Kalinda, or lead, had never seen a man until the night she was chosen. NEVER. She literally falls in love with the first man she has ever seen. Really? #3. The wives compete with each other to move up in rank. But what actually comes with the rank? A bigger room? The book doesn't tell us the purpose of them moving up in rank. It seems they are all treated the same no matter what and he already has his favorites. Also when some of the wives die in battle, wouldn't that automatically move everyone up?
I wish the magic had a bigger part in the book. The gifts that some of the characters had were interested but were more of the backstory to the politics. If you are interested in books about court life or stories based around religion then you'll enjoy this novel.

Predictable, flat, totally underdeveloped.
This book contains elements and plot points that could be interesting, but all of it is woefully underdeveloped in favor of a stupid, childish completely flat romance. In the span of a few chapters, the main character goes from never having seen a man in her life, to being completely and totally conventionally in love. It seems like most of the story exists as an elaborate casing for a stupid romantic fantasy. I was hoping for a lot more based on the description. What I got was a trussed-up romance novel that delivers on none of it's fantastical elements. The narrator is not great either; she often bumbles pronunciations of character names even halfway through the book. Avoid this one.

So very long for no reward
It seldom works out that when you find yourself wishing the dialogs and monologue would just finish already that the whole story doesn't end up feeling that way too. So much to trudge through for so little story.

Not what I thought
The thing to know about this book is that, depending on your definition, it either borders on or celebrates rape culture. Sure, the plot is about resisting the stronger parts of that culture and nothing is graphic, but it was just too much for me.

This was a good story, except that the heroine was very weak and indecisive until the end. She actually became. a bit trying with her constant weakness but the author made het strong in the end. For me it just took too long for the heroine to fight

Really lame, predictable, cliche/stereotypical.
This was recommended by a co-worker and I wanted to like it but couldn't get through it. I re-started listening at least half a dozen times, but the characters were extremely boring, predictable, cliche/cookie-cutter, and everything fit into over used stereotypes. Even the descriptions of things felt premade, cliche, and fit awkwardly. Heroine has a bunch of men in love with her for no apparent reason; unrealistic and disproportionate amount of devotion and risk taking, compared to what the heroine actually has to offer. Unbelievable in the way the characters interact; extreme but predictable and lame. God-mode for protagonists, without actual challenge to characters. One dimensional, and reads closer to a cheap romance novel than actual fantasy work. Returned this audio book because it wasn't worth keeping.

Just Average
I was really excited when I started this. I thought I would be reading about a kick-a$$ heroine who fought the status quo to change the world. Boy, was I wrong. I entered a world where women are bought and sold like chattel, and are forced to battle one another for their place in the world and for the entertainment of men. And do the women rail against this injustice? Nope...they train to fight one another and accept their fate like the pets they are. Ugh!
The main character is Kalinda, who appears to look down on the girl-on-girl fighting...but her heart's desire is to stay in the mountains and train other women to continue their legacy. Instead, she's selected to be the wife of the King D-Bag and must fight to win the "honor" of being the Rajah's 100th wife.
The only thing that was enjoyable about this was the scenery descriptions. King really brought her world to life in her descriptions. The way women were treated REALLY bothered me, but I appreciate how the author calls attention to the wrongness of it.
But the rest of the book was very disjointed. The romance was developed way too quickly, with no rationale or emotional buildup. The antagonists (the Kindred, the General, and of course, the Rajah) felt too scripted. They were fully one-dimensional...evil and selfish with none of that pesky moral ambiguity.
I don't have high hopes for the next two books, but I still plan to read them.

Detailed world, simple characters
The story was extremely interesting and very well written! The plot kept me on the edge and I loved the heroine main character. My only point of critique is that there weren't many dynamic or in-depth secondary characters. I felt many of the characters were too cut and dry with little substance other than that they fulfilled their role to the story. Other than that one qualm, overall I'm really glad I read this book and found this author!

Simple and Predictable Story with Little Action
We're told the story of 18 year old Kalinda in first person, beginning with her being chosen to serve among the emperor's courtesans and 99 wives. She comes across a plot by the tyrant that threatens her, and she has to jump into action....but she doesn't. She talks, meets, thinks, and plans. There's some action in the end, but much of the book is Kalinda thinking to herself, pondering events and drooling over a man she barely knows. There's an evil family member, bad king, power hungry peer, and a simple twist near the end. I don't necessarily mind a simple story if there's a connection to the characters, but sadly there's none of that here. The characters are flat and unlikable, with little caring for them or satisfaction (other then the book coming to an end). There's MUCH better fantasy out there - skip this one.

Wanted to like it...
I found this story really boring. Couldn't wait for it to finish. I won't be buying any others in the series.

interesting story, very well performed (read). I enjoyed listening to it. Calming in places, exciting in others.

Enjoyable
I wasn’t sure about this at the beginning as seemed to be dragging initially but definitely worth the listen very enjoyable. Great narration was able to picture the characters and what was happening. Can’t wait for the next book now.

worrior woman standing upfor what she believes in
I loved this book From the first page till the last the writing style flowed so beautifully, the main female character is strong and willing to risk anything for the people she loves To me this story was one of self discovery to find out and be proud of who you are that even though your past has never been certain your future can be. seeing the main character fight her way through trails she was going through was amazing she was fighting using her emotions her mentality and also with her new found abilities finding yourself on a road to self discovery is never easy when u find out u where lied to all your life. I can not wait to read book 2 I am so excited
