Publisher's Summary

The House of Fortune is a glorious, sweeping story of fate and ambition, secrets and dreams, and one young woman’s determination to rule her own destiny.

In the golden city of Amsterdam, in 1705, Thea Brandt is turning eighteen, and she is ready to welcome adulthood with open arms. At the city’s theatre, Walter, the love of her life, awaits her, but at home in the house on the Herengracht, all is not well—her father Otto and Aunt Nella argue endlessly, and the Brandt family are selling their furniture in order to eat. On Thea’s birthday, also the day that her mother Marin died, the secrets from the past begin to overwhelm the present.

Nella is desperate to save the family and maintain appearances, to find Thea a husband who will guarantee her future, and when they receive an invitation to Amsterdam’s most exclusive ball, she is overjoyed—perhaps this will set their fortunes straight. And indeed, the ball does set things spinning: new figures enter their life, promising new futures. But their fates are still unclear, and when Nella feels a strange prickling sensation on the back of her neck, she remembers the miniaturist who entered her life and toyed with her fortunes eighteen years ago. Perhaps, now, she has returned for her…

Sad to finish...

I loved this book and couldn't wait to find out what would happen... now I'm sad it's finished! Beautiful story.
The narrator was excellent too, but I can't say the same for whomever proof 'listens' to the book before it is released. There were so many repetitions of sentences, something that became more and more frequent as the story went on. Disappointing Audible!

Read The Miniaturist first

Will not make sense if you have not read a the Miniaturist.
Good story and good narration.
Let down by poor editing/production. Lots of repeated lines. In one case you can even hear the narrator sigh at herself and reread a section with different intonation.

Poor editing

Great narration and endearing story but the editing is poor throughout. There are numerous examples (about 20) where the voice artist repeats a line and this “pick up” hasn’t been edited out. The effect can be quite jarring, and takes you out of your enjoyment.

Tedious, much ado about nothing

The narrator speaks very slowly and cannot seem to make the characters voices sound different and half way through I put the speed up to 1:3 which made it almost normal speed of speech and much more bearable.
The story: omg, just make the farm into a successful pineapple plantation and it could have been the toast (& Pineapple jam) of Amsterdam and been a brilliant story of transformation and trading dreams instead of all the waffle and palaver that goes on instead. What could have been an incredible 2nd novel has been lost. And the character of the Miniaturist is never realised or finalised in any way shape or form. She is just forgotten.
Nella is such a pathetic character in this book, i thought she would become the family’s strong matriarch and begin and run a successful business much better than Marin and Johanns & Otto. I kept waiting for her to grow some balls. I thought she’d start a relationship with the scientist, milking his knowledge of plants and starting a jam, tea & tinctures business using & manipulating all Johanns former trading contacts and warehouses.
