Story
Here is a gripping account of the major postwar trial of the Nazi hierarchy in World War II. The Nuremberg Trial brilliantly recreates the trial proceedings and offers a reasoned, often profound examination of the processes that created international law. From the whimpering of Kaltenbrunner and Ribbentrop on the stand to the icy coolness of Goering, each participant is vividly drawn.

Story
This compelling book on Hitler and Stalin - the culmination of 30 years' work - examines the two tyrants during the Second World War, when Germany and the Soviet Union fought the biggest and bloodiest war in history. Yet despite the fact they were bitter opponents, Laurence Rees shows that Hitler and Stalin were, to a large extent, different sides of the same coin. Hitler's charismatic leadership may contrast with Stalin's regimented rule by fear, and his intransigence later in the war may contrast with Stalin's change in behaviour in response to events.

When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, they sent virtually the entire Jewish population to Auschwitz. A Jew and a medical doctor, the prisoner Dr. Miklos Nyiszli was spared death for a grimmer fate: to perform "scientific research" on his fellow inmates under the supervision of the man who became known as the infamous "Angel of Death" - Dr. Josef Mengele. Nyiszli was named Mengele's personal research pathologist. In that capacity he also served as physician to the Sonderkommando, the Jewish prisoners who worked exclusively in the crematoriums and were routinely executed after four months.

The last months of the Second World War were a nightmarish time to be alive. Unimaginable levels of violence destroyed entire cities. Millions died or were dispossessed. By all kinds of criteria it was the end: the end of the Third Reich and its terrible empire but also, increasingly, it seemed to be the end of European civilization itself. In his gripping, revelatory new book Ian Kershaw describes these final months, from the failed attempt to assassinate Hitler in July 1944 to the German surrender in May 1945.

Story
This book is the culmination of more than three decades of meticulous historiographic research on Nazi Germany by one of the period’s most distinguished historians. The volume brings together the most important and influential aspects of Ian Kershaw’s research on the Holocaust for the first time. The writings are arranged in three sections - Hitler and the Final Solution, popular opinion and the Jews in Nazi Germany, and the Final Solution in historiography - and Kershaw provides an introduction and a closing section on the uniqueness of Nazism.

Her parents and two older sisters were taken to the gas chambers, while Eva and her twin, Miriam, were herded into the care of the man who became known as the Angel of Death: Dr Josef Mengele. They were 10 years old. While twins at Auschwitz were granted the 'privileges' of keeping their own clothes and hair, they were also subjected to Mengele's sadistic medical experiments.

Most Australians have heard of the Boer War of 1899 to 1902 and of Harry 'Breaker' Morant, a figure who rivals Ned Kelly as an archetypal Australian folk hero. Born in England and emigrating to Queensland in 1883 in his early 20s, Morant was a charming but reckless man who established a reputation as a rider, polo player and writer. He submitted ballads to The Bulletin that were published under the name 'The Breaker' and counted Banjo Paterson as a friend.

In the shadow of Auschwitz, a flamboyant German industrialist grew into a living legend to the Jews of Cracow. He was a womaniser, a heavy drinker and a bon viveur, but to them he became a saviour. A stunning novel based on the extraordinary true story of German war profiteer and factory director Oskar Schindler, who came to save more Jews from the gas chambers than any other single person during World War II.

Story
'If Hitler fails to invade or destroy Britain, he has lost the war,' Churchill said in the summer of 1940. He was right. The Battle of Britain was a crucial turning point in the history of the Second World War. Had Britain's defences collapsed, Hitler would have dominated all of Europe and been able to turn his full attention east to the Soviet Union. The German invasion of France and the Low Countries in May 1940 was unlike any the world had ever seen. It hit with a force and aggression that no-one could counter and in just a few short weeks, all in their way crumbled.

An Endearing Diary
- By Anna Spencer on 24-11-2017
Publisher's Summary
This landmark work answers two of the most fundamental questions in history: how and why did the Holocaust happen?
Laurence Rees has spent 25 years meeting survivors and perpetrators of the Third Reich and the Holocaust. Now, in his magnum opus, he combines largely unpublished testimony with the latest academic research to create the first accessible and authoritative account of the Holocaust in over three decades. Rees argues that whilst hatred of the Jews was always at the epicentre of Nazi thinking - and the Holocaust was the most appalling crime in history - what happened cannot be fully understood without considering the murder of the Jews alongside other Nazi plans to kill millions of non-Jews as well. He also reveals the inner machinations of the Nazi state and shows how there was no single decision to start the Holocaust; instead, a series of escalations cumulatively created the horror.
Through a chronological, intensely gripping narrative featuring the latest historical research and enthralling eyewitness testimony, this is the compelling story of humanity's lowest point.

A fantastically written book 📖 📚
I really enjoyed this book, every page had something useful that one could take something useful away with it. To date, this is the best book, on the topic of the WWII Holocaust, written to date. If you are perhaps new to reading WWII holocaust books and/or are looking for a read/listen that covers everything in an easy to digest manner, whilst not getting into too much detail on anyone aspect of the subject matter; than this is your book. Author Laurence Rees is a very capable writer and has written about four to six books on WWII topic. I hadn’t realised that I already have two of his other literary works. Given that I enjoyed the other books as well, I’m confident to say that this wasn’t a one off. Read this book and then check out the others Well done 👍🏻 Cheers, David Doyle,

If you could sum up The Holocaust in three words, what would they be?
Very well researched and eloquently told, this is fantastic account of the atrocities of the Holocaust and how it came to be. Was absolutely galling to listen to at times, but that's the point of educating yourself about this ghastly crime against humanity. Particularly engaging for a newbie to this historical event.

Excellent, balanced view of a book
Would you consider the audio edition of The Holocaust to be better than the print version?
Yes
What did you like best about this story?
That it touches on all of the Holocaust, not one work, or death camp. It provides the links between the perpetrators and their actions, but totally avoids sensationalising the history
Have you listened to any of Mr Jonathan Keeble’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but he was excellent. Very clear, and seemed to have a tone that was respectful and sympathetic of the subject matter.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Astonishing Piece Of Work
I've read and watched Laurence Rees's work about the ' Final Solution ' which was made by the BBC and is on Netflix as a 6 part documentary. This book is 25 years of work combined into as the author correctly states ' A New History '. We all know about the atrocities of the Holocaust and how the sick, elderly, disables and Jews were persecuted. This book is a little different, though it does highlight the atrocities of that period it actually takes the readers into the mechanics of how and why the Holocaust came about. I've actually ordered and received 2 other books by the author and a couple more books about this subject as even after reading and watching things about the Holocaust I still can't understand how one deluded maniac could influence a nation of people to rally against a race that Hitler blamed for the Germans losing the First World War. Highly recommend this book for people who would like to know how this all came about and why it is still important to this day to keep this dark episode of the 20th Century open for future generations to learn from.

Holocaust - A masterly telling
Where does The Holocaust rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of the finest audio history books I have listened to. Totally engaging. A clear and measured account of the darkest error of western European history.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Holocaust?
This does not really apply. The whole book is a highlight.
What does Jonathan Keeble bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Mr Keeble is a masterly narrater. Vocally clear and engaged with the text, a model of the professional readers art. Quotes from holocaust survivors are read with character, without a trace of caricature.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. The text is too long and the subject matter means that I for one needed some respite.
Any additional comments?
No

JK is probably the best narrator in audible and i am drawn to books he covers as i find him an easy listen - he does a first class job here as did the author who's strength in assembling material is astounding . . at points i had to stop listening as the content is so dark and shows the depths of depravity to which the human mind can sink . but i also felt an obligation to get through the book as my modem sacrifice does not even scratch the surface of the suffering of millions for the sake of the deviant ideology .

History Repeats Itself ?
As I enjoy history books, there isn't anything in particular I dislike about the book. It is a timely reminder of how human beings can allow themselves to believe demagoguery when they benefit from it at someone else's expense ( Jews, Poles, everyone not considered racially superior). It is an extremely well researched book, with accounts from individuals who were there. Even though everyone knows about the extermination of European Jewry, the level of Nazi anti Jewish sentiment made me feel physically sick. The level of collusion
To formulate extermination very frightening indeed. In current times we need to remember for evil to succeed all it takes is people doing nothing.

Amazing. Terrifying. An insight like none I've read or watched before.
The narrator is, I feel, a good choice. He brings a level of intensity and care to a telling of this history that is respectful.
The book itself is well paced, indepth and compelling to listen to.
The author presents the research, backed up by citing documents and interviews, in a chronological way. He gives his opinions and shows why he came to those conclusions.
If you want a broader (in the sensw that it covers a larger time scale) knowledge of the acts that took place in this dark area of our recent history, that is also full of detail this is definitely a good book to try
