About this listen

The complete unabridged audiobook of J.R.R Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of 13 dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey ‘there and back again’. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon....

The prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies since its publication in 1937, establishing itself as one of the most beloved and influential books of the 20th century.

An appropriate entry point for children & young adults into the mythical world of Middle Earth, 'The Hobbit' is an easy tale to listen to & narrated enthusiastically by Rob Inglis, who breathes life into the various characters.

It's a marvel that he's able to give each dwarf their own distinct voice. I'm less fond of the vocals for the various songs sung in the story, although Dwarf & Hobbit singing probably isn't as fair as Elves' voices.

I read this book as a teenager, watched the Peter Jackson trilogy as an adult & listened to the audio book as a father. As they say, "three times a charm" & I certainly agree!

A nostalgic tale from Middle Earth

The originator of the genre. Fantastic storyline and notable characters. A truly great read for young and old alike

loved it

Long ago, during rainy days or cold evenings during summer holidays, mum used to put on a recording of The Hobbit on *cassette tape*, to keep me & my brother amused. I loved it then, and loved this version, too. I like that the story does have morals, and that the reader is addressed directly from time to time, slightly archly.
The person reading tries an array of voices, pretty successfully, probably aided by the fact that none of them are female (a relic of the time - and probably place - of writing, and the genre as it was).

A Classic
