Story
With the gradual shift from the 1970s disco scene, a new style of music known as hip hop paved way for underground music talent; creating local artists to pop up from all over the Brooklyn, The Bronx, Philly, and Jersey. Some refer to it as “The Golden Era” but rap music was just coming into its own in the early to mid-1980s. This audiobook The History of Hip Hop, Volume 2, takes you behind the scenes and gives you the little-known details of the 1980s era which would lay the roots for an artistic experience that has built the existence of many rap artists now.

Horrible production - AVOID
The narration is atrocious, with the narrator mispronouncing words and names of well known artists. ("Cayenne West"?) The writing is scattershot and sheds no new light on hip hop as an art form. Who is this book for? It doesn't give enough info to teach a layperson what hip hop is, and it breaks exactly zero new ground for hip hop heads. I was excited to listen to this and it's a crushing disappointment.

More than just a history.
This audiobook is a lot to take in. Just because it is 2 hours long does not mean that it is not a note worthy listen. If you have ever wanted to know the true origins and the background of hip-hop this is the book for you. The author, [author:Eric Reese|2776559] does more than tell you about mainstream hip-hop but breaks it down into sub sections. I enjoyed the fact that he mention certain forms of hip-hop that does not get as much recognition like gangster rap does. Being of Haitian descent I enjoyed the fact that he mentioned Haiti and what they do for hip-hop. Also there are a lot of people who enjoy K-Pop but did not realize that K or J-Pop was formed because of American Hip-Hop.
There were at times where the narrator, William Butler, sounded as a professor and not as someone who enjoyed what they were narrating. For that reason I had to give this audiobook a 4.5 and not a 5. It was well written and I learned a lot. The name of this book does not seem to with the content. However for me that was a good thing. This is so much more and I am glad this was written.

Interesting Hip hop book
The History of Hip Hop, by Eric Reese, narrated by William Butler.
This book is about hip-hop & music. It was interesting to listen to so many new facts about hip-hop. Eric did find a nice way to interpret the history of hip-hop. It provides many remarkable facts about music and history. The narrator also did a good job. Liked his performance. I would recommend it to people interested in music, looking for extra facts. It is about 2 hours long which is suitable to listen.
My hope is that this review helps in your decision to obtain this book :)

Disappointing and sometimes factually questionable
The narration is absolutely diabolical. I suspect that it is a text to speech program. The content of the book itself reads more like a compilation of lists from Wikipedia than anything that any coherent author would have put together. If you are looking to immerse yourself in the history of hip-hop culture then this is not the book for you, it's smooths over many of the most important stages of the development of the culture. If I could give this zero stars I would.

Any additional comments?
This book was my introduction to Hip Hop and I recommend it both to people who want to rip their hands into the music and for those that been around it for years.
The book covers Hip Hop from every possible angle, charting the cultural as well as political significance of the misunderstood and underappreciated genre. I found The History of Hip Hop one of the best books I ever had.
