In 1761, on a sunny day in September, a King and Queen met for the very first time. They were married within hours. Born a German Princess, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was beautiful, headstrong, and fiercely intelligent… not precisely the attributes the British Court had been seeking in a spouse for the young King George III. Publisher's Summary
1719, the Highlands of Scotland
The Jacobite rising has failed. The Stuart king remains in exile in Italy, leaving Clan Gregor’s dreams of restoring their name and lands unattainable.
In despair Alexander, chieftain of the Loch Lomond MacGregors, hopes that his young but gifted son Alex will one day restore the clan’s fortunes.
Yearning to please the father he loves, Alex embarks on a gruelling education which at times seems senseless to him. He hopes to one day exceed his father, becoming a cultured and influential chieftain, who can win battles both with words and weapons.
Clan life has always been dangerous and even more so for the MacGregors. A series of brutal events strikes at the heart of the family and threatens the clan’s very existence.
Can Alex, still a child, somehow save the clan and those he loves or must he turn his back on them and forge his own future?

Fine telling of Alex's coming of age
This must be one of the best prequels ever! Extremely well written ...... i laughed and cried along with the characters as their stories developed in the harsh environment and political unrest of the Scottish highlands in the early 1700's. I have read (or listened to) all the books in the Jacobite Chronicals several times and at the end of this one, I plunged right back into reading them all again so I didn't have to let go of the McGregors just yet.
.... And the performances of Mary Jane Wells and Will M. Watt were brilliant.

A woderful and heartbreaking passage to adulthood
Alex’s story is so beautifully written with love, laughter, heartbreak and childish antics all mixed in with the brutality of Clan living in the highlands.
Julia Brannan once again made me laugh and cry with Alex, Duncan, Angus and Clan MacGregor creating a childhood that shows how these wonderful young boys grow into the men of ‘The Jacobite Chronicles’. Thankyou.
Will M Watt and Mary Jane Wells once again bring the characters alive and make me want to listen again and again to the story. The beautiful singing of Karen Matheson was definitely an added bonus.
Thankyou all once again.

Absolutely stunning performances, well written!
Absolutely stunning performances, well written, truly wonderful to get Alex's history! This brings so much to understanding what made Alex who he is when you meet him in The Jacobite Chronicles. This broke my heart in so many ways with the tragedy and the beauty of the highlanders circumstances. Historical accuracy is once again wonderfully woven into the story. I really loved experiencing Alex, Duncan, Angus, and other characters as they grew into the men and women we meet later. This story was an emotional experience, so be ready to lose yourself in the beauty and the tragedy!
Mary Jane Wells, Will M. Watt, and Karen Matheson deliver wonderful performances in DUET that really bring the story to life. I enjoyed every word and I'm so grateful this author prioritizes quality audiobooks with incredibly talented performers!

Such a compelling listen
I have read all the Jacobite Chronicles and side novels and eagerly awaited Alex’s story. The narration is impeccably done by Will M. Watt, Mary Jane Wells and Karen Matheson. Their talent at bringing the story and characters alive is incredible, regardless of funny scenes, sad scenes or achingly gut wrenching scenes. I truly enjoyed their narration and the way in which it gripped me from the first words read. Of course, Julia Brannan writes so beautifully and weaves a masterful tale. Another triumph in Julia’s Jacobite tales.

A MUST-READ FOR HIGHLANDER FANS
Julia Brannan is hands down one of my favorite writers, and anyone who has read her books about Alex and Beth MacGregor needs to read THE HIGHLANDER’S TALE to understand what truly motivates the MacGregor brothers. It also sets up the clan relationships in THE GATHERING STORM and THE STORM BREAKS, while increasing the tragedy for Duncan and Kenneth, and providing more insight into the behavior and resilience of Alex, Angus, and Kenneth following the death of loved ones. I am astounded by Brannan’s creative ability to provide such an incredible prequel to Alex’s clan and family. My husband couldn’t believe how often he found me in tears as I listened to this novel. I wish this series could go on forever!
