Publisher's Summary

Intent on winning a Lowlander's tournament, Bran MacLeod travels south with his laird. All goes as planned, except spirited Miss Enya Ross continually distracts him, and in the oddest situations. With no business lusting after a baron's daughter, Bran decides to return to Raasay - until his laird pledges Bran's services in the fight to reinstate Mary, Queen of Scots to the throne.

Enya has no deference for the lines of nobility, or for the Great Divide that separates Lowlanders from Highlanders. The way Sir Bran's eyes hunger for her ignites an internal fire Enya cannot quell. All her life she's wanted adventure and excitement, but now her every thought is consumed with the rugged Highlander.

With all odds stacked against them, can their forbidden love withstand the tumult of war and the menace of betrayal?

Gorgeous! Perfect! Encore! Bought the paperbacks!

So...I just spent $43.00 on Amazon for the paperback format of this series...because of this book. That's right! This series just got awarded SPACE ON MY NON-CORPOREAL BOOKSHELF!

Brad Wills. Oh my god! Can that man read! Follow this narrator and just listen! Damn! I have my own review to write just for him in a moment.

I finished this book in a day and all but ran to write a review, but work and babies detained me. Now that I'm here, I'm speechless.

When I sit down with a book, I have a number of expectations. Make me forget they aren't real. Make me forget where I am. Make me forget to live in this world. Make me hate to return (and I have a GREAT life I love to get back to). The problem (for me) is, the writing must be beyond credible. The world building has to be so real that I can smell the floral of a world I've never seen. The characters have to be so human that I want to love them as if they were my own.

Amy Jarecki does.

When I put down Book #1 of this series, there was too much "Outlander" for me to enjoy it. Don't get me wrong. I am the world's biggest Outlander fanatic, but I turned to romance to take a break from Outlander without straying too far from the Highlands of Scotland. I said, "If Jarecki could get away from Gabaldon and stick to her own story, her story could be something great." In Book #2, she does and oh my god...! The Outlander in Book #1 really held this author back.

No matter my complaints, I couldn't stay away. The way Jarecki depicted the Highlands, her writing style called me back. I read another romance novel (I audible one 10-hour book a day) and I found I MISSED Jarecki's writing and her Highlands. Regardless of my issues with Book #1, I started book #2 and am SO glad I did!

The attraction level between Bran and Enya is perfect! It builds, not too fast, not too slow, but just right. A look across the room. The sudden and unexpected (yes, unexpected! I did NOT see it coming!) rendezvous, the eye contact and first kiss. It was all so perfect! Nothing felt unnatural or rushed. Bran and Enya just were.

The plot was outstanding! Kept me guessing. Kept me moving. Kept me crying out. Jarecki got tears out of me over and over. It was just a beautiful passionate romance about their love. The sex was only natural, and so not the focus despite it being there and being very hot!

If I had one complaint, ***spoiler free** it's that the ending was too abrupt. An abrupt time jump following the climax left me VERY unsatisfied, but not so much that it affected the ratings this review is getting. This ending is a bittersweet one. So much so, that I ran to Book #3 JUST to see if we learn more about Bran and Enya (we do). I really wanted an epilogue.

Now! About Brad Wills!

Holy. Shiite! When he first opened his mouth...his accent...The Scottish accent has only about 14,000 variations **exaggeration**. I'm used to David Tennant (Lowlander) and the entire cast of Outlander. The best Highlander accent I've ever heard was in one episode of Sex and the City. Season 3 Episode 12 "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" when Samantha hooks up with a man from Edinburgh. Brad Wills doesn't just depict the Scottish accent, he depicts the Highlander brogue perfectly! It actually took me a while to get through Chapter 1 and 2 to understand him, but once my ear adapted, it was much easier. Just gorgeous reading! His performance really brought this book to life around me. I have four new series I will be starting soon JUST so I can hear more of Brad Wills read. FOLLOW THIS NARRATOR 'CUZ DAMN!

This is the end of the review, scroll down for spoilers.

***START SPOILERS START***

On a personal note: I am currently undergoing my 3rd IVF and have lived through two miscarriages. The end of this story really hit home to me and it broke me. Jarecki! You depicted miscarriage and all the emotions involved too well! You broke my heart! Well done!

No redemption

I have read several books by this author. I really loved that her stories didn’t end with a marriage and happily ever after. The previous books showed the triumph of love through the reality of married life with its varied ups and downs. I actually cried while reading this book. The parents had no connection with their daughter. Even the brother mentioned had no sympathy or compassion for the heroine. The ending was over the top and atrocious. ***spoiler alert*** The heroine, Enya, is literally betrayed and her father takes her away with hands shackled behind her back while the hero is tied down and wailing for her. Then the heroine is dumped at a nunnery to be have her skin scraped off immediately followed by the administration of an abortion tonic that causes her to lose her child. The descriptions of pain, bleeding, and betrayal were just too overwhelming to me. The end was rushed and had no resolution. What man would calmly submit and say nothing while he’s looking at the man that caused him to lose his child and his wife to endure torture. I regret the hours that I lost. This one was awful with a ton of loose ends.

Great story but poor wrap up.

I loved almost everything about this book but the ending was a little disappointing. There was no/little consequences for the "villains". I hope more is explained in future books, I'd enjoy seeing certain characters get what they deserved both the good and bad.

The Highland Henchman: Highland
By Amy Jarecki

A captivating adventure.

True love can conquer all in this breathtaking and thrilling story of Bran and Enya. A concept older than time of society's expectations for whom one is expected to marry, but the heart only see's and feels love, not one's station or status. Bran MacLeod is born of low birth. His mother works in the kitchen and he is but a henchman to his Laird. Then his eyes see Enya Ross, a beauty far above Bran's station. Enya notices this big, handsome highlander and can't seem to take her eyes off him. As Bran does everything to keep his distance from Enya, she does everything to get closer to him. This is a powerful, captivating story filled with well developed characters. A very exciting plot filled with backstabbing intrigue and a most beautiful romance. Everything a reader wants in a great highland story. An absolute must read. Although I highly recommend the audiobook version. It is beautifully narrated. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

WORST ENDING EVER!!

Where does The Highland Henchman rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Everybody gave it a good review, but I found the book angered me. I liked the first book between Anne & Calum, but in my option in this book Calum is a Bad/Betraying Guy.

What did you like best about this story?

The Love Between Bran & Enya.

Have you listened to any of Brad Wills’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He did fine.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

THE PART THAT MOVED ME TO START HATING IT & JUST WANTING IT TO END.

WHEN THE CALUM SHOWED HIS TRUE COLORS (BETRAYER).

Any additional comments?

***SPOILER***
I can't believe the characters forgive these people for betraying them. I can understand Enya forgiving her handmaiden (Heather, I Think) for telling on her. She did it thinking it was the best not knowing, but Calum's betrayal ended with her being basically tortured & then loosing her baby. I'm sorry but I would look at Calum like this is your fault & would never be able to trust him again. Let alone have him stand up next to you at your wedding or even owe him anything. Calum & especially Malcolm should owe Bran & Enya for the life they helped kill (Enya's Baby). Like I said above I HATED the Entire Ending & Because it was so bad I give this book 2 stars.

Another delightful listen

Another delightful story from Ms. Jarecki. I loved Bran, an honourable & loyal warrior and Enya is a perfect match for him, sassy and fearless. Their story is full of obstacles, but love wins in the end and they get their HEA, my fave kind of end.
I am a big fan of Mr. Wills narrations and I really enjoyed this one too. Thank you for another great listen.

Very Entertaining.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would recommend this audiobook to friends because it's a perfect example of a wonderful exciting story, with a wide range of characters that the narrator 'read' really well.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favourite character was Bran, the hero. He is the perfect man, thoughtful, caring, loyal, and he'd lay down his life to protect those he loves. He has a heart of gold and is a hero in every sense of the word.

What about Brad Wills’s performance did you like?

I really enjoyed Brad's narrative voice, I could listen to a whole book read in just his voice without the characterisation! The fact that he is so good at all the different voices he takes on is just a bonus. It amazes me how he can go from a really gruff man's voice, to a young woman's voice so flawlessly. It's a relief to know that a man can take on a woman's voice without sounding like one of David Walliam's female characters from the BBC series Little Britain.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely it would have been wonderful to have had the time to listen to the whole book in one sitting. I managed it in two though, so that wasn't too bad.

Any additional comments?

I think to begin with people may find the Scottish accents that Brad portrays a little difficult to follow. That isn't a fault of Brad's, it just proves how good he is at his job. The Scottish accent IS difficult to follow. I just want to say that even if you struggle a little at the start to understand it, by chapter 2 or 3 you should be able to follow it easily. Persevere, it is definitely worth it.

Wonderful Book

This is such a wonderful story written by Amy and narrated by the best in the business, Brad Wills. I felt as though I was living every minute along side with the people in this book. All her life Enya Ross wanted adventure and excitement, but now her every thought is consumed with the rugged Highlander, Bran MacLeod. What an adventure it was. I loved it!
