Publisher's Summary

After an epic maiden voyage that introduced Earth to a larger universe - and a cosmos full of terrifying new enemies - Captain Eric Weston and the crew of the NAC spacecraft Odyssey have spent months cooling their heels under their admiral’s watchful eye. But when Earth’s newest ally, the Priminae, strike a defense deal with the North American Confederacy, the Odyssey finally receives her orders: return to Ranquil, the Priminae’s war-ravaged homeworld, and lend badly needed support against the invading Drasin.

Weston and his crew are hungry for action, yet once back on Ranquil, they realize not all is as it seems. Yes, the Drasin are a formidable foe, but Weston suspects a powerful unseen force is waging the war that could alter forever the face of the universe. Determined to unmask the mysterious puppet masters, Weston and his motley crew defy NAC protocol and venture into deep space...where they will discover an enemy unlike any they have ever faced. The long-awaited follow-up to the spectacular Into the Black: Odyssey One combines old-school space opera with modern storytelling to create an exhilarating new sci-fi adventure.

A fitting continuation

As per my expectations from the first novel, The Heart of Matter is exactly as the story deserves to evolve and grow.
The characters, for the most part, deepened through this story, the settings have expanded and evolved, and the questions, whilst many answered, have also grown broader and more wondrous.

I have already purchased the next book and have found tasks to do as an excuse to plug my headphones in and get into it.

Great story!

Once More, into the breach

This is another great book in the story line. It had some more visceral elements, I felt, more so than the first book. Like the first book, I found it hard to put down quite a bit. The action ramps up. I did have a problem with how the action jumps around in the middle of the book, but other than that, it was a good read.

OMG....just SO amateurish

I thought Odyssey was actually not bad, and it made it worth trying book number 2...

But, unfortunately, the switch to a new narrator was SO JARRING and with TOTALLY unrealistic sounding character voices, that it caused me to start thinking more critically of the actual story ...which is truly mind-numbing in its lack of depth and the fact that NOBODY talks or acts the way a real person would under the scenario.

This second book in the series was so bad, and the narration so grating and inappropriate (eg, very strong & stereotypical voice accents, like a strong NYC accent...apparently just because the narrator thinks he can do those accents well)...but unfortunately, he can’t, and it was truly painful to try and listen any further.

Do yourself a favor and skip this book (and the series), unless you like boring, unrealistic and derivative sci-fi).

Odessey mission continues NAC support for Priminae

The North American Confederacy Odessey returns to deep space with a mission to assist the Priminae, a human race many galaxies from earth, in their battle to save their worlds from the Drasin. The Odessey delivers an ambassador and Marine trainers from the NAC to the Priminae home world, Ranquil, to establish formal relationships, and help the Priminae prepare their own forces for future battles with the Drasin. The Odessey's other missions include learning more about the Priminae and the Drasin.

The book is filled with detailed sci-fi space and land battles, The Odessey's survival depends of the audacity and military genius of its captain, Eric Weston. Ground battles produce additional heroes among the Odessey's Marine contingent, as they battle an enemy that reproduces as fast as the Marines can kill them.

Good

Enjoy main character Capt. Westin. Not really find of some of the "voices" narrator uses. Specifically Steph and bridge female. Bad southerny. Also, author repeats phrases way too much, and uses current/historic euphemisms which seem odd and out of place. Tech descriptions nice, especially the transition process.
Looking forward to the next one in the series!

I completely agree with Karen Conover

and she writes a better review than I can

14+ hours of book, 13+ hours of space battle

If you take a nap during the battle there isn't much need to rewind, it all just goes on and on

sci-fi at its best

missing some if the characters we met in the first book, but still a good yarn.
