Publisher's Summary

Having explored the shadowed ruin of Beacon Hill, Sadie and August are drawn deeper into a dark and winding history. It was at the infamous Rainier Asylum that local horrors were first conjured, and compelled by a mix of duty and guilt, the librarians begin to look into the institution's sordid past.

For years, locals have reported seeing something hideous stalking about the abandoned asylum - something with large eyes and twisted limbs. When a young farmhand meets this diabolical presence face to face and disappears, Sadie and August decide to visit the site to search for him, certain that his disappearance is linked to their investigation.

There, they find the nighted corners of the shuttered institution are astir with many terrible apparitions. The things that walk the halls of Rainier Asylum are horrific beyond imagining, and as she descends into the depths of the forsaken building, Sadie stumbles upon something most unexpected - something that connects her to the very horrors she seeks to overcome.

Interesting and spooky. Enjoyed the characters.

This was an interesting story and the first by this author for me. I love ghost tales, and the things that Sadie experienced gave me chills at times. I loved how she was willing to accept what she saw and felt, and still had the nerve to move on. She did get scared also, making her a more believable character. She had a wonderful supporter in August. I would like to read the first in the series, though it is not necessary to do so before listening to this. Melissa Moran did a wonderful job with the narration of this audiobook, properly scared, spooky, and real. I received a copy of this audiobook as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.

I have it a shot

The first book in this series, Haunting of Beacon Hill, was a better story than this one. Unfortunately, they’re both somewhat ruined by the narrator. Not only is she nasally, and she places her tongue incorrectly when saying certain letters (especially “st” combos), but she tends to end every chapter with an upward inflection as if the sentence isn’t complete. Very annoying. This series isn’t worth continuing with, though every other book by Mr. Ibsen I have loved! (Just stick with Mr. Hempel !)

Boring!

Not much of a plot - just running around a haunted asylum bumping into nasty things.
