Story
College professor Stephen Barlow needs cash. Badly. He puts his skepticism aside and signs on to a paranormal research organization in the hopes of scoring a fat bonus. Enter Chaythe Asylum: a long-shuttered and controversial institution where patients were allegedly subjected to unethical experiments. Stephen deems the old building, closed in 1989 after a series of grisly murders, as good a place as any to explore the possibility of the supernatural, and arranges to take a tour with his students. But it turns out that the asylum is not as abandoned as it seems. There is something sinister in the building.

Story
I began to suspect something was wrong with the gothic building when its family fled in the middle of the night, the children screaming, the mother crying. They never came back to pack up their furniture. A new occupant, Anna, has just moved in. I paid her a visit to warn her about the building. I didn't expect us to become friends, but we did. And now that Marwick House is waking up, she's asked me to stay with her. I never intended to become involved with the building or its vengeful, dead inhabitant. But now I have to save Anna.

Story
She's always watching.... When Guy finds the deeds to a house in his mother's attic, it seems like an incredible stroke of luck. Sure, the building hasn't been inhabited in 40 years and vines strangle the age-stained walls, but Guy is convinced he can clean it up and sell it. He'd be crazy to turn down free money. Right? The house is hours from any other habitation, and Guy can't get phone reception in the old building. He decides to camp there while he does repairs. Surely nothing too bad can happen in the space of a week. But there's a reason no one lives in Rookward House, and the dilapidated rooms aren't as empty as they seem....

Publisher's Summary
Some houses breathe....
Elle is thrilled to spend a month minding the beautiful Gillespie property. More than an hour's drive from the nearest town and surrounded by forest, the aging mansion is ideal for someone seeking solitude.
But things start to go very wrong very quickly.
Elle discovers a crumbling graveyard nestled in the woods. It contains a generation of the house's residents, all with an identical year of death.
Scratching in the walls...slamming doors...whispers in the night...a locked room...
As Elle explores deeper into the house, she begins to unravel the property's dark and dangerous history. At its center is Jonathan Gillespie, a tyrannical cult leader and the house's original owner.
And, as Elle soon learns, just because he's dead doesn't mean he's gone.
Includes a bonus short story, "Crawlspace", which inspired Gillespie House.

this must be a young adult novel because it really doesn't have a real chill factor, although the narration was good.

Leaves you wondering what you just read.
What disappointed you about The Haunting of Gillespie House?
The story line is scattered at best, and your not really sure where the story takes place or what error the language the main character uses confuses you on what decade she exist in.
What could Darcy Coates have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Mentioned time line, established stronger plot line and leave out some of the useless small details and focus more on the "villian". Not enough leading up to the main encounter and the encounter was brief and underwhelming.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Laurel Schroeder?
The narrator was fine.
What character would you cut from The Haunting of Gillespie House?
Mrs. Gillespie could have easily have been single and taking a vacation or off to a businews conference, the mentioning of her husband was not needed and the words and space used on him could have further developed the main plot.
Any additional comments?
Nope.

Great Performance and Spooky Mansion
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. If you like creepy old haunted Gothic mansions, then this is the story for you. Slamming doors, cobwebs, dusty oil portraits, ornate mahogany furniture, locked doors, nightmares, rats, secret passages, whispers in the night, graveyards!
What other book might you compare The Haunting of Gillespie House to and why?
Burnt Offerings. Not quite the same.
Which character – as performed by Laurel Schroeder – was your favorite?
The main character... the one that has to stay alone in the haunted house.
If you could take any character from The Haunting of Gillespie House out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Again, the main character. Maybe that's because the performance is so innocent its almost sexy.
Any additional comments?
Loved it... highly recommended.

Good - But not what I thought it would be...
Would you try another book from Darcy Coates and/or Laurel Schroeder?
I will try one more of Coates to see if it is any different. I was not impressed with Schroeder's performance.
Would you be willing to try another book from Darcy Coates? Why or why not?
Yes. I would like to see if any of her others are scary.
Would you be willing to try another one of Laurel Schroeder’s performances?
Probably not.
Was The Haunting of Gillespie House worth the listening time?
The story line was good enough to try one more, but it was not scary in the least.

Okay.
I think this story had great potential but the authors main character is droll at times and the details used in the book range from over-used to not enough. The ending fell apart. Also the narrators voice ruined the story for me entirely.

Suitable for most ages
Purchased as Whispersync on the cheap courtesy of Book Deals.
Nice creepy tale of hidden passages, ghosts, a sorcerer, and the unsuspecting house sitter. First she rejoices in the solitude of a large victorian away from town and away from the little apartment she lives in, but she soon has a lot of second thoughts on the subject. Suspense is done with a light enough touch that it does not descend into real horror.
The Laurel Schroeder has a pleasant voice quality and good pacing, but is a little light on portraying the depth of emotion and sense of urgency.

Have only complete a few books from Darcy Coates but she is steadily becoming one of my favorite suspense/horror writers.
