I began to suspect something was wrong with the gothic building when its family fled in the middle of the night, the children screaming, the mother crying. They never came back to pack up their furniture. A new occupant, Anna, has just moved in. I paid her a visit to warn her about the building. I didn't expect us to become friends, but we did. And now that Marwick House is waking up, she's asked me to stay with her. I never intended to become involved with the building or its vengeful, dead inhabitant. But now I have to save Anna.

Publisher's Summary
Sadie has a gift. And she'll do anything to keep from using it.
At 16, Sadie Young had a brush with death, and as a result she became more sensitive to the supernatural. Rather than embrace this gift, she spent years running from it, and from the darkness that once preyed upon her.
Now 25 and working as a librarian, Sadie is called upon by a desperate family friend to look into a strange series of events. A teenaged girl has entered a reputedly haunted house in town and has gone mad. Committed, the girl attempts suicide and claims to be terrorized at all hours by a horrific specter known as "Mother Maggot".
Despite having subdued her gift for the past nine years, Sadie wishes to assist the girl and reticently agrees to visit the site of the haunting. But upon entering the house on Beacon Hill, she discovers that Mother Maggot isn't merely a figment of a disturbed teen's imagination....

Ruined before the 3rd chapter
I have been a loyal fan, Mr Ibsen, since reading your first book. Your work is well written with blind alleys, twists, turns and, occasionally, being figuratively smacked in the face with a dead flounder! Excellent writing - never would I have dreamed anything you've written would draw such a low rating from me and I'm very sorry to do it now. The cause of this rating has nothing to do with the actual book. I plan to buy the electronic book and read it happily. The reason for the low rating is this - the person doing the narrative is very irritating. Her voices are ridiculous and I had had enough when I heard, very clearly, the word "library" being pronounced as "liberry!". I had to back to see if she was supposedly speaking as the little girl but no! That was all I needed to hear. I'm very sorry, again. I have every reason to believe that when I read the actual book, I will enjoy every word. Just hate to waste an Audible credit.

Meh.
This wasn’t one of Ibsen’s better stories. I was pretty disappointed. I wish I could give it a better review but then I would be lying. I should have known because the name “mother maggot” is quite silly. I probably would have rated it higher but the narrator also ruined it. I agree with the others that noticed the narrator had weird inflections and could not pronounce the word “library” correctly. She also had an odd habit of not pronouncing the “t” sound at the end of words, but she really emphasizes the “t” sound when it’s in the middle of words. It really grated on my nerves and I hope she never narrates another Ibsen story.

Another great listen
This book was recommended to me since I liked the previous book from this author. Another great haunted house listen. Loved the theme and the writing. The narrator mispronounces some stuff and doesn't know there are two Rs in library. I didn't knock her but pronouncing incredulous correctly but then mispronouncing incredulity gave me a chuckle because I listen to audiobooks all day and I am a snob now lol. But seriously great book and performance, definitely buy it if you like the haunted house theme. And the ending!! Ooph.

Not a big fan here.
I'm all for a good scary story. While the story was scary and I thought it was okay, I felt like there wasn't really anything original to it, ie. an old huge haunted house, said house is being haunted by a cruel person who was murdered, a ghost that possesses one person only to find a better person, and then there's no happy ending because it's not that easy to get rid of an evil spirit when finding info online. There were no surprises whatsoever. Yet, there were so many unanswered questions. The narrator did an all right job. I couldn't help but wonder how the laugh for Mother Maggot was written though. There were also times when she would pronounce words...questionably. For example, "libarry" instead of "library." The first time I heard this that went back to confirm. Yup, she repeatedly said "libarry." This is also the second narrator I've come across who is sure to pronounce the "t's" in words when it's usually quiet. There was a part after visiting the house the first time when Sadie and August are heading back to the staircase. I'm not sure what shape the staircase was set up in, but there was a line: "They flopped across the lower steps." There was no mention of them having fallen. This was just a line that stood out to me. I found it questionable that Sadie was so scared of Mother Maggot that she would have gone back to the house to look for the mirror - at night - when she didn't know if the mirror even had anything to do with the ghost. I was a little confused by the ending. I tried to find the part when August tells Sadie about Mother Maggot and who she must have been, but for whatever reason, it was avoiding me. I couldn't remember how long the house had been empty/when Mother Maggot had died, but thought it was a very long time. Yet I was under the impression the reader was to assume that Mother Maggot was Sadie's mother, correct? Unless I was misinterpreting that part of the story. I received a free audiobook code in exchange for an unbiased review.

Liberry
Unless she’s working with a lisp, the narrator needs to go. She can’t pronounce library, her characters voices are poor, and her “t’s“ are too strong while her “s’s“ are too soft. Even her “o’s” are nasally. Her reading detracts from the story.

Story is great, but read it instead.
I loved the story, didn't too much like the narration.. The "Libarian" told me to give this a listen (kidding) but seriously... How many times do I have to hear libarian before the narrator realizes that neither R is silent in the word. I couldn't continue, the book is fine though.

Surprisingly Good.
I was afraid this might just be the usual shock/horror drivel about hauntings but actually it was not at all bad, good suspense was created with a few unexpected events. As I am still looking for the 'next James Herbert', undeniably the best horror writer of all time, I might just give one of Ibsen's other books a go.
