Publisher's Summary

There's something wrong with Ashburn House....

The ancient building has been the subject of rumours for close to a century. Its owner, Edith, refused to let guests inside and rarely visited the nearby town. Following Edith's death, her sole surviving relative, Adrienne, inherits the property. Adrienne's only possessions are a suitcase of luggage, 20 dollars, and her pet cat. Ashburn House is a lifeline she can't afford to refuse.

Adrienne doesn't believe in ghosts, but it's hard to ignore the unease that grows as she explores her new home. Strange messages have been etched into the wallpaper, an old grave is hidden in the forest behind the house, and eerie portraits in the upstairs hall seem to watch her every movement.

As she uncovers more of the house's secrets, Adrienne begins to believe the whispered rumours about Ashburn may hold more truth than she ever suspected. The building has a bleak and grisly past, and as she chases the threads of a decades-old mystery, Adrienne realises she's become the prey to something deeply unnatural and intensely resentful.

Only one thing is certain: Ashburn's dead are not at rest.

The BEST audiobook I've heard so far!!!

The previous reviews on this book are spot on!!! it is an awesome supernatural thriller, my kids and I love that theme and it's been delivered expertly! We've been on the edge of our seats listening to it and look forward to getting to listen to it every chance we get! No hesitation recommending this one! You'll love it!

Keep an open mind...

I listened to this story with the expectation of it to be quite boring based on the other reviews that I read. I was pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns in it, but hoped for a little more excitement before the end of the story. It was still very entertaining and I would recommend it for a nice drive if you want to listen to something that keeps your attention and it does keep you a little thrilled throughout the story. I wish there was a sequel as I would like to know more about the concept of the family.

Very bad narration

The narration is terrible. Every few seconds she sounds like she is breathing through a straw or blowing up a balloon. Big waste of a credit. I can't follow the storyline because of that. Narrators can either make or break a good story.

Spoilers ahead

I really wanted to like this book but the main character spends 95% of the book speaking about how scary the house looks, her cat, and how she's broke and needs to get paid by her clients.

The character is a freelance writer. I know freelance writers that write for a living and they're not broke like the main character is. The ending wasn't satisfying.

I kept waiting for thrills and scares and it wasn't scary. I feel like an R.L. Stine teen horror book is scarier than this book.

Finally towards the end of the book the character does more research on the house. She finally talks to more townspeople about the history of the home.

She finally goes to the library to research. Why didn't she research the house before moving in? You can research houses on real estate websites now.

It was just too slow for much of the book without much action. I'm sure it's not easy to write a book but at the same time as a reader I just wanted true spooks.

Story line not well put together

I was disappointed with this tale. Though the reader was fine, the story line was not well developed...I felt I had wasted my time and money on this audible book.

UMM...Am I in the twilight zone?

This book had great reviews, like it was "terrifying" and "intriguing". If by terrifying they meant boring then I will agree. I was never once scared or worried. I could not wait for this book to end. It wasn't even good if you consider that it was probably written for teens...Cause I can do teen books sometimes. Besides being boring there were weird things like the main character being upset about how her " friends" treated her or if her "friend" was hurt after they had met only once! That does not make you a friends. Also there wasn't enough back story for you to care about her. The mystery was a big fat nothing. Looks like Im in the minority but I would not waste a credit on this book if I could go back in time.

Gasping narrator

The narrator is great BUT. A serious mouth-breather. I was frequently distracted, counting her gasps for air in between sentences bs listening to the story.

Otherwise great narration and story. Very easy, yet suspenseful on a long car ride

One of my top listens!

Would you listen to The Haunting of Ashburn House again? Why?

Absolutely! I feel as if this is the kind of book you can listen to again and again, so much detail that doesn't bog the book down will find its way out with every listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Adrienne, i find myself in her. Its so nice to find a ghost story without a level of romance. I love the passion of this girl and how she take courageous steps in her life!

Which character – as performed by Eva Kaminsky – was your favorite?

Adrienne, You almost forget its a book!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! i found myself doing thing that made it possible for my to have my headphones in!

Any additional comments?

I am about to go see if this author has more books like this! Fingers crossed!

very, very boring

Nothing interesting happened for the first 8 hours... though you could make it more interesting by playing a drinking game. every time the author says "like a" then you have to take a shot. the story reads like a (joke intended) high school writing assignment... most importantly, it is not scary. if anything, it's sad. most of the story is just about an isolated woman and her cat.

Ooooooof!

Scared the bejesus out of me. I normally listen to storys whilst I drift off to sleep..........big mistake. Lay there wide eyed and occasionally jumping. I'm now really tired but that was a good story.

A Modern Horror Classic

I'm not usually a fan of ghost stories although to be honest I haven't read many besides Burnt Offerings and The Elementals. I read Hunted by Darcy Coates and fell in love with her gory descriptions. I chose this book because it's the best reviewed of her books on Audible. I'm a huge horror fan and couldn't believe that a ghost story had me so spooked. I can't wait to read more of her books. I enjoyed the narrator but in the first few chapters, her loud intake of breath before she read a long sentences was distracting. I'm not sure if it stopped or I just got used to the sound since the book is so engaging.

I will keep this short but wanted to thoroughly recommend this novel. It is a good story, the heroine is likeable and I really enjoyed the narration. Well worth listening to if you like haunted house fiction

great story...shame about the 'ghost'

I really enjoyed the story and it started off really well however the appearance of the 'ghost'which was more a monster/ghoul ruined it for me but that is just a personal preference. really liked the premise of the story, it was performed well, length of the book was good and it kept me interested however it dampened with the appearance of the ghoul. otherwise enjoyable and was why I gave it 4 and not 5.

Lacking depth

The performance is great and overall this a nice, entertaining little story but even putting aside the comical zombie rising from the grave it just lacks so much depth. Other reviews have highlighted there are lots of small discrepancies but for me there were three particular points;
1) a huge absence of descriptive writing, I have no real sense of any character, personality or even the house itself.
2) the way that a brief visit by three local girls suddenly advances to the stage of best friends forever, with no logic, time or context.
3) most disappointingly is that the main character has no tangible journey between normal outlook and complete acceptance of zombie relative digging herself out her grave in the garden and attempting to eat her great niece.

Clearly I’m in the minority but whilst I found this a thoroughly pleasant diversion it lacks any depth, character or intensity.

a bit of a let-down in the final analysis

Well, this book has plenty of atmosphere, plenty of action though i fail to understand how come the candle didn’t immediately set fire to the attic dust or the old floorboards, plenty of sharpy dialogue but, are we really meant to believe that Edith hadn’t already tried burning Eleanor permanently? She sssme to know so much and yet couldn’t completely vanquish her sister. Even that is a bit corny. Of course, there is an explanation given at the end but in such a way that it’s obvious the author isn’t too sure how to end this. It was fairly good up to the last few chapters though predictable too.
