Bard. Warrior. Rebel.

Eighteen-year-old Liobhan is a powerful singer and an expert whistle player. Her brother has a voice to melt the hardest heart and is a rare talent on the harp. But Liobhan's burning ambition is to join the elite warrior band on Swan Island. While she and her brother are competing for places in this band, they are asked to go undercover as travelling minstrels. For Swan Island trains both warriors and spies.

Their mission is to find and retrieve a precious harp, an ancient symbol of kingship. If the harp is not played at the upcoming coronation, the heir will not be accepted and the kingdom will be thrown into turmoil. Faced with plotting courtiers, secretive druids, an insightful storyteller and a boorish Crown Prince, Liobhan soon realises an Otherworld power may be meddling in the affairs of the realm. When ambition clashes with conscience, Liobhan must make a bold decision - and the consequences may break her heart.

Critic Reviews

"Completely transported me to the wonder and enchantment of ancient Ireland." (Callie Bates, author of The Waking Land)

"This breathtaking, often heartbreaking Celtic-flavoured fantasy novel from Marillier (the Blackthorn & Grim series) couches a challenging quest in storytelling both earthy and unearthly... Most satisfying is [Marillier's] ability to weave multiple strands of narrative into a brilliant tapestry. This lush fantasy is sure to win Marillier many new fans." (Publishers Weekly)

Truly wonderful read

Another brilliant story by Juliet Marillier. The warrior bards are all complex characters with interesting back stories that are woven through the narrative with care. The challenges they face, both real and imagined, throughout the story help each one grow in themselves and as a team. The narration by Imogen Sage is beautifully done and I am looking forward to continuing my journey with these wonderful characters.

Thoroughly Enjoyably!!!

Juliet Marillier has once again crafted a superb tale with fantastic, well developed characters. It is a real page turner with a satisfying ending, which will leave you eagerly awaiting the next book.
Imogen Sage does a brilliant job bringing all of the characters to life.
If you like Robin Hobbs books you will probably like Juliet Marillier's too.

I hope you read this review.

held me captive from start to finish as all of Juliet Marillier's work does.
my first book love was the Foxmask series, then The Dark Mirror. Her story style is ancient magical fantasy in one way or another and I love that she captures the voices of the ancients so well.
As for the speaker of this audiobook, I was startled by the accented deeper voice but she turned out perfect and made the story truly come alive, hearing her sing the ancient songs made me so much better understand what I would've read and missed.
this was my first audiobook as opposed to reading a book and it has been a wonderful, unforgettable experience that I shall now truly want to enjoy again and again and again. Thankyou all who produced this to help me find a way to read books (my love) when I suddenly find myself permanently too ill to do so at 31 years old.
