About this listen

A former Medal of Valor winner, Minnesota detective Alexander Rupert is now under subpoena by a grand jury on suspicion of corruption. So when he's asked to look into the false identity of a car-accident victim named James Putnam, a man who in fact died 15 years earlier, Rupert sees a potentially big case and an opportunity to regain his respectability.

But the investigation puts him in the path of "the Beast", the nom de guerre of Drago Basta, a cunning veteran of the Balkan wars and a sociopath assassin who has been searching for Putnam for years. Putnam had something that Basta still wants. If Rupert's life was in shambles before, it's now also in danger. Threatened by the Beast and suspecting his wife of cheating, Rupert falls for the seductions of the dead man's former girlfriend. As he feels his life spinning out of control, his steadfast brother and fellow police detective Max may be Rupert's last hope.

Critic Reviews

"It's a taut, intelligent, heart-ripping story that explores the darkest places in the human psyche." (William Kent Krueger, author of Iron Lake)

In my opinion not as enjoyable as the Life We Bury but good enough to keep me interested to listen to it to the end. I would like to read more of Allen Eskens books

OKAY

I enjoyed the character development in this book and that we got to know the lead character Alexander quite well. They were a couple of twin tunes that I wasn’t expecting. Overall a very enjoyable list. I highly recommend this book.

Very enjoyable listen!

Narration was terrible - the main female character had Marge Simpson’s voice!! Overall the book was “meh”.

Marge Simpson a villain??

I'm so glad I persisted listening to this book. It really had me hooked around the halfway mark. I suspect in part, it's because I expected to meet Joe Talbot again but this was a new story. Definitely had me intrigued - well worth the read.

Took a while

The story was good - and held attention. The narration was very hard to listen to - the characterisations were frustrating at times and I had to persevere.

A story to hold your attention

Allen Eskens does it again. Loved the characters and the plot development. Narration is great and easy to listen to. Highly recommend

Another Gem

Sad to lose the main character at the end although it is refreshing to have a more realistic ending and bravo to the reader

Characters well developed and believable

Allen Eskens has quickly become one of my favourite authors. This is the third book of his I've listened to this fortnight! And yes, I've accidentally done them backwards, but they are still thoroughly enjoyable in any order thankfully.

Loved it!

Performance was a bit of a letdown after The Life We Bury. Probably took until the heavily accented bad guy to appear for some significant variation between voices to become clear, and eventually the two detectives had some differences. Quite plain narration beforehand though. Story itself was great! Definitely had you wanting to find out each character’s little secrets, and fed partial reveals the whole way through. Gonna look for whichever book is actually the second Joe Talbert book now…

Not actually a continuation of the Joe Talbert character, but a good story!

The titling of this series confuses me. Why is it called The Joe Talbert series, when in fact it’s the Detective Max Rupert series?
The storyline is okay, quite violent, unnecessarily so in parts.
You may find yourself struggling to keep track of the characters as I did.
The first book in this series, that does include Joe Talbert, is a much better read/listen.
I will give this book a lukewarm recommendation.

Curious
