Publisher's Summary

After the bloody trials of Alexandria, Sir William Gold is readying for a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He hopes, too, that the Holy City might allow his relationship with Emile, cousin of the Green Count of Savoy, to develop.

But the Roman Emperor of Constantinople has been taken hostage by an unknown enemy, and the Green Count is vital to the rescue effort. It is up to Sir William to secure his support, but he soon finds that his past, and his relationship with Emile, might have repercussions he had not foreseen....

Suddenly thrust onto the stage of international politics, Sir William finds himself tangled in a web of plots, intrigue and murder.

Amazing book but very quiet narration.

I struggled to put this one down, every spare moment I had was listening to this great work. Don't start the series here, but if you have listened to the proceeding books this one is also top notch. Less hard in our poor William, but enthralling and poignant. The new narrorator is good, and seemed to get considerable better as the book went on, but the volume was very quiet for me where the proceeding books were not.

Plenty of action

The best bit is reflecting on this book after the authors note at the end. It only adds to the interest. Fascinating tale around the history.

Excellent but would have liked better continuity in narration

I enjoyed this installment just as much as the first two in the series. This one had a different narrator and if the same narrator could not have been used for the whole series, I wish more attention had been paid to using the same pronunciations of the names of the main characters as in the first two books. It was a bit jarring to have names such as Pierre, Juan, and Emilie suddenly pronounced as “Peer”, “Jew-on” and “Eh-meel”.

Marvelous!

Cameron brings history into intimate contact with the listener. His scholarship backs his story with a deep wellspring of real knowledge to which, he in turn, applies his true gift of magic - the transportation of you and me into his world to see the landscapes, to feel the passions, hatreds, and friendships, smell the exotic aromas of foreign lands and taste the dusty grit of battle mingled with blood. It come to seem as if we were one of his companions! So real are these manifestations of novel that Cameron's world becomes the preferable one to reality making on wish we never had to go home!

a real 5-star

I've rated far too many books at 5-stars. I need to either recalibrate my scale or give you, Mr. Cameron, 10 stars. fabulous narration, and the finest example of the art of words I've read in too long a time. thank you for this presentation.

I love this author

If you like historical fiction with and aren’t afraid of some graphic descriptions of martial violence. I think all of his series are the best I’ve read. Just awesome

One of the very best

I love this author and this series, but especially this reader, who is new in this book (to the series, he had read a lot before).

This series just gets better

This is the third in its series. Each book has shown better development and detail. The story and the attention paid to the authors research, makes the series. His characters are gaining depth and complexity, rather than the flat, cut out personalities you find in other period books. Nor will you find yourself knowing what is going to happen. The reader is fantastic, I swear the man was crying when he discussed the death of the hero's horse. Outstanding work Mr. Cameron

Once again, excellent in every way.

William Gold's story continues as well as it left off. I could go on about this and I probably should, but I'm simply going to say, read it! please.

Excellent written read and researched series

I must say I share the author's love of history and this period in particular. The book continues to bring the period to life with great attention detail and historic flavour. Not 5 starts because I occasionally find moments when I get annoyed with the style or narration but that may well be that it is so well written and performed at it is William's idiosyncrasies that grate on mine. Looking foward to the next book. The story and characters are brilliant combination of history and fiction.
