Story
Perhaps thanks to TV period dramas, the popular imagination may picture the Edwardian era as an idyllic window between the wars, a time of manners and tea on the lawn. But below the surface lies a frenetic and often bizarre age where scientific leaps forward went hand in hand with belief in fairies, and secrets of sex, lies and murder simmered. Across 12 episodes, in this sequel to his Victorian Secrets, Stephen Fry uncovers some of the startling and unexpected hidden histories of the Edwardians.

Stephen Fry travels into the most remarkable place we know - our brain. The organ of knowledge and the one we know least about. Over 12 episodes Stephen explores just how much we’ve learned about this mysterious structure in recent years and tries to answer some of the most difficult questions that remain. To do this, we relay the discoveries and stories of neuroscientists, psychologists, anthropologists and even philosophers, to add illumination and perspective as we travel. Each episode will be full of brainy stories: some shocking, some thrilling, some scarcely believable.

As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey. Hoop and his associates uncover a nest of Xenomorphs, and hell takes on a new meaning. Quickly they discover that their only hope lies with the unlikeliest of saviors.... Ellen Ripley, the last human survivor of the salvage ship Nostromo.

An amazing interplay of history, reporting and personal reflection
Wow. I was shocked at what Patrick uncovers and thrilled at the professionalism of the narrative. He weaves re-enactments from historical documents with interviews of people who experienced physical and psychological torture ordained by the New South Wales government. As he delved deeper and develops more contacts and detail, the tension ramps up like good drama. But it’s not drama. It’s our hidden history. Characters range from inspirational to unrepentant vile examples of Australian men at the time. And overlaying this is Patrick’s complex but ultimately life affirming relationship with his family history, played out with conversations with his mum, Mary. She, more than many of the others, shows personal growth and true humanity. Just before Patrick reads out the credits, there is a wordless interaction between Mary and a (very) young family member that allows an at-times bleak narrative to sour with hope and joy. Dr Pól Miles-McCann, psychotherapist.

And the truth wins
I listened to this podcast with bated breath and optimism even though I knew there would be difficult facts to unfold.
This notorious idea of a prison just for gay men is abhorrent and so far from the mind of those who believe in inclusion.
I am glad that this podcast exists so that many shamed people can find solace in their truth for the better.
Patrick and Simon have given the world a gift worth every pain to bring it forth.
Human evolution is slow and yet in our time it's time to accept that different doesn't mean bad. This podcast is proof the truth wins and no laws can control it.
