About this listen

Winner of the 2018 Fantasy Prize and Kindle Storyteller Finalist.

This is one secret he’s keeping to himself. And who would believe him anyway?

Farin, the gravedigger’s son, lives in the medieval village of Heap. The 18-year-old is an outsider who is bullied and ostracized by the villagers. His father has succumbed to a life of drinking, and the young man has no option but to take over the job of gravedigger.

But Farin’s life takes a dramatic twist when the village witch dies. As he prepares her for burial, he finds an amulet hanging around her neck, and he can’t resist trying it on....

The story isn’t overly complicated and the end of the book is more the end of an episode than of a stand alone book, but I liked it enough to invest in book two. The narrator has a great manner and plays the characters well (I listened at 1.2 speed though as at normal speed it is perhaps a little slow). All in all a bit of easy escapism.

Quirky story narrated really well

loved this light hearted story. it is very entertaining easy to follow with lots of retribution coming to the ugly sadistic antagonists. the varied characters give depth and amusement to the fun plot.

fun, witty and entertaining.

I've been listening to a lot of Book 1s recently - the first part of Fantasy series - and all have been okay, but nothing to really write home about.
Then there's this book!
Firstly, the performance is probably the best I've heard in some time. Brilliant acting, comedic timing, a sense of character in each person.
Secondly. the story - it's good, deceptively simple, then not simple, then we go for a ride! Around the 10 hour mark I felt the who dunnit element wasn't very strong and maybe a bit drawn out. but apart from that the characters are great, the interactions are fresh and sometimes surprising, with additions of humour and introspection.
A surprisingly good listen - I'm off to listen to Book 2, for the first time in ages!
Also. very nice production. The takes are indistinguishable, the narrator obviously felt comfortable, and the overlap engineering is very good. Top work!

Excellent Performance and Engaging Story
