Some series’s endings leave you hanging. This one didn’t. It all tied off both satisfactorily and very neatly. In a way this is unfortunate as I’d like there to be more of it to come and was sorry to have reached the end. The adventure lasted right up to until then. It was an excellent well written story with great twists and lots of action and romance. The narrator also did a bang up job. I thoroughly recommend either listening or reading it or even doing both.

Things have certainly changed for ex-fighter pilot, Rafe Lancaster, who is surprised to find himself the First Heir of House Stravaigor, one of the elite families that rule the Britannica Imperium. The inter-house politics are diabolical and Rafe must continue to keep his relationship with Ned Winter, the First Heir of powerful House Gallowglass, quiet. While Rafe’s father slowly fades, Rafe must dash back to Aegypt when Ned and his archeological entourage fail to make contact for several weeks. Once there, Rafe and his security escort must contend with Rafe’s stowaway half-sister, some murderous Prussians, and a mythical and deadly pyramid.

I’ve absolutely adored this steampunk sci-fi adventure / romance series. In this finale, there are some great gadgets, lots of suspenseful moments, and an underlying rich and satisfying romance between the two main characters. I did feel we had well and truly covered archeological digs in the last book, but this had a fresh take with the competition for new technologies between the British and the Prussians. I’ve also enjoyed Rafe’s sort of rags-to-riches journey and I thought the ending scenes worked extremely well as a satisfying epilogue to the three books. 🎧 UK voice actor extraordinaire Gary Furlong does a great job on the German accents and language as well as his usual brilliant British ones. I only wish more of Anna Butler’s books were on audio!
