More for YA
I really tried to like this book, but it was just too "young" for my tastes. The adventure was lackluster, the main character is annoying and immature (he's 17 y/o and gets really embarrassed to spend a night in a room with a female under the premise of being married?? Not to mention his annoying trait of always having to be a hero without actually having the skills to be a hero.), and overall the rest of the characters were boring. I don't understand the need to add more companions to your group in an quest to save the world. Adding an old woman to your group? Really? Honestly the main character is what got me in the end. He was willful and ignorant, choosing to follow his own desires, which got him and all his friends into trouble. I don't care if his "instinct" is good, if you're on a quest and leaving your home for the first time ever in your life, you listen to the people with the experience. I just couldn't take his whining and childish attitude/actions anymore. This book is better for a teenager going through their "rebellious" state than an adult looking for a real adventure.

Should've Been Labeled YA
Any additional comments?
Main Male Character is 17yrs old. This book might have been aimed at YA rather than a more mature audience. It caught my interest enough that I listened to the end of the book. That's where I found out it ended on a cliff hanger...!
The flow of the book was slow, although the characters knew that the "Black Knight ( title of bad guy is so over used by other authors, I don't know why this author couldn't come up with a more original description for the evil villain (heh) ) these road trip companions still find time to go to an inn, take baths and have a leisurely dinner then sleep and continue on in the morning as if time wasn't that imperative to get to their destination as quickly as possible. Plus, the name of the lead protagonist, spelled
GEWEY sounds like ( gooey) really? who would actually name their kid gooey? Is the author trying to make a funny book? How old is the author? I don't think I will keep this one, it doesn't have that high adventure feel like the Theft of Sword Series or The way of the Shadows where I want to re-visit the characters again right after I just finish listening to the whole series.

Predictable, It Only Goes Downhill
What would have made The Godling Chronicles: The Sword of Truth, Book 1 better?
Better and more meaningful characters with more consistency to their background. A more pressing sense of plot, danger, and intrigue.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Not Brian Anderson.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Narration was generally good, but the main character was weak.
What character would you cut from The Godling Chronicles: The Sword of Truth, Book 1?
I don't know. The weakness of character development and the fact that I didn't care about any of the characters would mean...kill them all!
Any additional comments?
Turn back now...if you think book 2 will be better. You are wrong, it only goes downhill. More inconsistencies, more confusing problems (they are walking and talking, and then the main character stands up and leaves...what???). They keep going places with no goals, no reasons, just because they need to go places because of some rising threat. Its formulaic, but poorly written too. Don't waste your time or money.

This is a great series!
I love this series. It's the story of a very young man who unwittingly becomes a hero and the story tells of his growth and of his heros journey. It's a story of sword and sorcery and love, and the love part is appropriate for all ages and not mushy, or over done. If you like sword and sorcery books with elves and monsters then this is a book you'll probably like as much as I do.

Pretty basic.
Fantasy books or any book can have three basic strengths or weaknesses.
1) Characters
2) Worldbuilding
3) Story
I'm sad to say this book fails on all three. That is not to say that this book is exceptionally bad, but as an avid reader of fantasy books I desire something more than merely adequate.
1) This really is the worse offence. The characters in this book really don't have much depth, they behave in predictable clearly made-up ways and they are pretty blant. The hero is a basic goody boy without any complex feelings or personality traits. His "teacher" is much the same.
2) World is really simple. Like many fantasy books the world shows none of the complex social and economical systems present in realistic and believable fantasy worlds. On top of that the author even does a poor job describing the world as-is in a rich and engaging way.
3) The story isn't to good either, unfortunately. It's a pretty basic good vs evil story. Little nuance is presented. Everything progresses in predictable ways.
Maybe it seems I am being overly harsh here, this books isn't really unique in it's flaws. In fact these are pretty common in fantasy books. Most of the time I don't review these disappointing books, but ever so often my disappointment builds up and gets released. I guess this book is the unfortunate recipient of it, not that it is undeserved.
In summary, listen to this if you don't have high standards, maybe it is enjoyable then, otherwise don't bother.

Good beginning to a Decent Fantasy Series
Good start to this fantasy series. Not greatly compelling, and sometimes a bit slow, but no real complaints from me. I like the characters and the relationships that are forming, with developing bonds of loyalty and camaraderie. I also like the type of magic the godling uses.
No sex, no cussing. Some bloody violence, but not too dark. Sometimes the author slips up, inserting modern slang phrases, but otherwise, decent writing style. The author writes action scenes better than he does dialogue, in my opinion.
Here is an example of a vivid action scene, from book 6:
"Again the Ajagara charged, its impact this time causing large cracks to form in the pillar. One more assault like that, and Gewey knew it would collapse and his protection would be gone. He looked urgently around for alternative cover, but with the mist still shrouding his surroundings, there was nothing in sight. As the beast backed away for a third assault, Gewey crouched low, his leg muscles tensed and ready to spring..."
Solid gold narration by Derek Perkins.

extremely slow cookie cutter fantasy novel
I think the title of my review says it all. There tends to be a basic formula for fantasy novels and this one follows that formula to a T. Young unwitting hero who is untrained but nobel at heart, wise older man who takes the hero on a journey and instructs him in combat along the way, elves (there are alway elves), quest for a magic sword, you get the picture - no surprises here.

More Eddings than Tolkien
Would you try another book written by Brian D. Anderson or narrated by Derek Perkins?
In short no. The main protagonist was whiny and not really likable. I think it is a combination of the performance and lack of character depth that causes this.
Has The Godling Chronicles: The Sword of Truth, Book 1 put you off other books in this genre?
Not at all, I love this genre and will continue to read book from it.
Would you be willing to try another one of Derek Perkins’s performances?
Probably not, I found that the performance was disappointing, Gewey in particular is performed in such a whiny way that it was quite annoying.
What character would you cut from The Godling Chronicles: The Sword of Truth, Book 1?
Salma'tia and also Lee's confrontation with the Elf.
Any additional comments?
This story would probably make a great introduction to the genre. For more well read genre buffs you will not find this in any way satisfying. I came to this book having just read (listened to) Elantris by Brandon Sanderson and The Skull Throne by Brent Weeks both of those books are fantastic and this book just couldn't live up to the precedent.
Gewey is too whiny and snivelling for a protagonist, we get that he wants everyone to do the right thing, you don't need to reinforce it with wide-eyed innocence at every possible decision.
The book ends in an odd place, there's not really a cliff hanger as the "big climax" happens quite a bit before the end of the book and then it just tapers off into a nothing side story.
It's predictable at almost every point in the story, surprise! this character who appears kind isn't!
I don't think I will buy the second novel. Which will be the first time I ever let a series of books go unfinished (and I bought book 11 of the Wheel of Time after the disaster that was book 10 !)

bare bones.
this book seems like a 1st draft. how it made it to publishing I have no idea. the characters are cliché which I can understand and can live with, but in terms of their development and consistency it is abysmal. Lee starfinder (the protagonist's mentor) is a douche. How Gewey or any other character haven't punched him in the face yet, I have no idea. for a mentor, he has a worrying case of bipolar. one moment he is praising Gewey for a spur of the moment recklessness, next moment he is berating him (a beginner) for his lack of experience during training. not even women would play you hot and cold to this extent. there is a severe lack in continuity in terms of character personalities.
also, chapter 3 (i think. forgive me if i recall incorrectly) where does one begin? I understand that you want to dedicate an entire chapter to giving Lee a back story by letting Lee give a camp fire story. but the way the author writes it makes it feel as though Lee is reading out his life story from a book rather than orally telling it. It was a tough chapter to overlook.
all in all, it is passable.....barely. the ideas although cliche are fine. but lacks skilful presentation. the book tries to do too many things at once and does not give the appropriate effort required to flesh them out. much more thought required. and definitely hire some better proof readers.
the narrator does his best with the material he has been given, but I can understand if he lost the will to put in anymore effort without actually having to re write the entire book itself.

If you wrote a book while stealing all your ideas
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really, i keep on hoping its a late bloomer but so far im still stuck with the poor spotty oik.
What was most disappointing about Brian D. Anderson’s story?
he feels like he has raped Chris P and Tolkien for ideas and with no clue or no decent publishers has vomited his gooey proceeds onto the pages. a poor info dumping mess i would say.
What aspect of Derek Perkins’s performance might you have changed?
altering your voice for different characters is seen a a good idea.
Do you think The Godling Chronicles: The Sword of Truth, Book 1 needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
im curious where will he go. like Geordie shore or keeping up with the Ks u cant look away from the drivel.

Just feels wet
What did you like best about The Godling Chronicles: The Sword of Truth, Book 1? What did you like least?
The scope is good, there is plenty of story the get involved with. The book is just childish, the twists are barely twists, everyone is really nice to one another, no real character depth.
What could Brian D. Anderson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Been a bit more gritty and no so weak.
Any additional comments?
I did read that this was aimed at teens but thought I would give it a try anyway, if you're in the same boat I would advise against it. The story has no bite and just plods through, they do this, they meet them, they become friends, no real excitement. The narration on the other hand was very good.

If you could sum up The Godling Chronicles: The Sword of Truth, Book 1 in three words, what would they be?
really strong start
What did you like best about this story?
this has the potential to grow into something very interesting. I Iike the way that even in the first book parts of the story elements twist together and hope to see it develop in interesting ways. This seeding of plots reminds of the early books in the songs of ice and fire series
Have you listened to any of Derek Perkins’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I really like Derek Perkins performances, i think that he adds a real something to a story. His performance is great a usual.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

meh!
I probably wouldn't have finished this book if I was reading it myself. I found it very hard to care about the characters and the constant info dumps from characters narrating their own life events seemed dull. also the convenience of objects or characters turning up at the right time with no good reason just stank.... here have my hugely valuable magic sword. why? because you seem like a nice guy and it will be a plot point later in the story. oh come on!

Narrator is terrible
Any additional comments?
A pretty good story really but the narrator lets it down by using the same voice for most of the characters.
