A real surprise.
I had bought this audio book without reading the write up as I loved Me before you and the rest. So when it begins, set in the early 20th century ( read in with an American accent no less ) I was perturbed. “Oh well, I’ve bought it now- May as well hear it out” I thought...... 20 minutes later and I was hooked. The warmth of the women, the unlikely friendships that develop and the vivid painting of mountains- it carried me away to a time and place I didn’t want to leave. I genuinely loved this book and the fact it’s based around a true story made me love it even more.

Like another reviewer I don't like the sound of American fiction narrators but after reading other reviews I found myself totally agreeing - I really enjoyed the narrative and found the performance really engaging. Story weakened towards the end but it was still a lovely form of escapism, a beautiful setting and a wonderful group of Librarians.

Amazing Book and Fantasic Narration
“There is always a way out of a situation. Might be ugly. Might leave you feeling like the earth had gone and shifted under your feet. But there is always a way around.” ~Jojo Moyes, The Giver of Stars EVERYBODY STOP WHATEVER YOU’RE DOING AND BUY THIS BOOK!! I promise you won’t regret it. The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes is the unforgettable story of a group of women that become the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky. The women are all vastly different, but the way they come together to protect each other and serve their community is incredible. As you can probably tell, I LOVED this story. Absolutely loved it. I was immediately drawn into the beautiful descriptions of the Kentucky mountains, and by each unique character fighting to break free of the traditional expectations set upon women and create a life for themselves. I loved the lengths with which they would go to deliver books to their community, and the incredible life-changing impact that we all know that books have. The story primarily revolves around Alice, a British women brought to Kentucky by her new husband who quickly discovers the marriage to not be all she thought it would be; and Margery, a bit of an outcast from town, but the feisty leader of the Packhorse Librarians, and a women not afraid to live by her own rules. Together Margery and Alice discover what it means to truly fight for the life you want to live, and how far the bonds of friendship can sustain us. I loved all the beautiful romances throughout the story, and the ways that each relationship developed. The second half of the book completely took me by surprise with the new plot lines that were introduced, and by the end I found myself crying with a smile on my face. That ending was SO moving. I wish this review could truly do justice to this incredible story, but I honestly can’t. The Giver of Stars quickly became one of my favorite reads of the year, and one of my favorite stories of all time. I HIGHLY recommend that everyone read or listen to it. (The audio-book is PHENOMENAL by the way...I mean, it’s Julia Whelan...need I say more?!)

Worth the effort to get to know the characters
I so enjoyed this book. I’m not a fan of cheesy story lines, too predictable outcomes, ‘standard’ character types and this perhaps ventured into these areas a couple of times. But I found myself wanting to go back to my phone over and over to listen to the story to see what happened next. I do enjoy Jojo’s books and this was no exception-she has a way of drawing you in. Well narrated too.

Narrator doesn't do it justice
This is a gripping story which is quite different to the books I usually read. I enjoyed the story but the narrator didn't do it justice, in my opinion. There are a number of songs in the story and the narrator chose to read the lyrics rather than sing them. It meant the impact of the songs is lost from the scene. Also couldn't always differentiate the male voices so had to rewind and check who was speaking.

LOCKDOWN FAVOURITE
LISTENED TO THIS IN ONE DAY! I JUST COULD NOT STOP, FOUND A BIT DIFFICULT TO START WITH BUT ONCE I WAS AWAY THAT WAS IT. READ A LOT OF BOOKS RARELY LEAVE A REVIEW, BUT I FELT THIS ONE DESERVED IT.

Enjoyable second half
The first third of the book I found a bit slow going. However, by the end I felt connected with the characters and cared about what happened to them. English accent is a bit dodgy!

Incredible!
After being unsure of this book for the first chapter, I quickly became hooked! The storyline is very different to what I expected but I loved every second of it and I’ll be waiting impatiently for the next book by Jojo Moyes.

Best Jojo Moyes ever!
I loved this book - different from her others but fantastic when you get into it. Characters came alive and great plot twists.

This is not my usual book/ genre but I ended up loving this book! I think the narration was great and easy to listen to. Overall fabulous listen.
