Publisher's Summary

Mama say: "Your schooling is your voice, child.

It will be speaking for you even if you didn't open your mouth to talk.

It will be speaking till the day God is calling you come."

That day, I tell myself that even if I am not getting anything in this life,

I will go to school and become Teacher.

Because I don't just want to be having any kind voice....

I want a louding voice.

14-year-old Adunni has a dream: to be educated. But her father needs her bride-price, so sells his daughter to an older man, who demands she give him the fine boy-children his first two wives have failed to produce.

When things go tragically wrong, Adunni flees to Lagos. It's what she has always wanted, to leave Ikati and see the world, and though her heart is full of sorrow for her lost family and the shame she has left behind, still Adunni will not be quiet and do as she's told.

Sold again as a housemaid to a successful businesswoman, she continues to question all she sees: why Big Madam, in her big house, has a cage of sadness round her soul; what happened to Rebecca, the girl who worked in her place before; and whether it is possible, when you are born into a life of no money and plenty suffering, to become a somebody of value.

Plunged me into her world.

The narration was probably one of the best I have heard and did justice to this beautifully written narrative. I was at all times totally immersed in the world of "the girl with the Louding voice" sometimes holding my breath in anxiety for her as she shared her often harrowing experiences. I wanted so much for her to have happiness and the odds against it were so great. Brilliant

A beautiful book!

This is hands down my favourite book of 2020. It captured my attention from the very start. I fell in love with Adunni- I cried for her, laughed for her and felt genuine joy for her.
All the characters were so fleshed out, and the narrator was so fantastic, it was obvious who was talking just from the voices.
This is a book I wish I could experience for the first time over and over again!
100% recommend everyone read this.

A superb book.

A wonderful story, both beautifully narrated and written. A completely different “coming of age story”, set in Nigeria, in 2014. I especially recommend the story to younger women. In one word, inspirational.

A MUST READ

Brilliant in every way. The contrast between living standards in one country cannot be more vividly portrayed than this book. Who knew you could mourn for a book because it has finished.

Highly recommend

Exceptional narration really brought this book to life for me. Whilst harrowing material, the story elicited many giggles amongst the pain in every chapter, with beautiful Adduni’s journey with the English language taking her from ‘eyesballs’ crying to simply sitting on a chair, not necessarily on top of it. One might hope that this tale depicts a past era, so it’s confronting to realise otherwise. An important story narrated with a flourish that will have every character on my mind for some time.
