Publisher's Summary

Mama say: "Your schooling is your voice, child.

It will be speaking for you even if you didn't open your mouth to talk.

It will be speaking till the day God is calling you come."

That day, I tell myself that even if I am not getting anything in this life,

I will go to school and become Teacher.

Because I don't just want to be having any kind voice....

I want a louding voice.

14-year-old Adunni has a dream: to be educated. But her father needs her bride-price, so sells his daughter to an older man, who demands she give him the fine boy-children his first two wives have failed to produce.

When things go tragically wrong, Adunni flees to Lagos. It's what she has always wanted, to leave Ikati and see the world, and though her heart is full of sorrow for her lost family and the shame she has left behind, still Adunni will not be quiet and do as she's told.

Sold again as a housemaid to a successful businesswoman, she continues to question all she sees: why Big Madam, in her big house, has a cage of sadness round her soul; what happened to Rebecca, the girl who worked in her place before; and whether it is possible, when you are born into a life of no money and plenty suffering, to become a somebody of value.

Plunged me into her world.

The narration was probably one of the best I have heard and did justice to this beautifully written narrative. I was at all times totally immersed in the world of "the girl with the Louding voice" sometimes holding my breath in anxiety for her as she shared her often harrowing experiences. I wanted so much for her to have happiness and the odds against it were so great. Brilliant

A beautiful book!

This is hands down my favourite book of 2020. It captured my attention from the very start. I fell in love with Adunni- I cried for her, laughed for her and felt genuine joy for her.
All the characters were so fleshed out, and the narrator was so fantastic, it was obvious who was talking just from the voices.
This is a book I wish I could experience for the first time over and over again!
100% recommend everyone read this.

A superb book.

A wonderful story, both beautifully narrated and written. A completely different “coming of age story”, set in Nigeria, in 2014. I especially recommend the story to younger women. In one word, inspirational.

A MUST READ

Brilliant in every way. The contrast between living standards in one country cannot be more vividly portrayed than this book. Who knew you could mourn for a book because it has finished.

Beautiful and moving

I loved everything about this book and I am so glad I listened to it rather than read it. The narrator is brilliant. She really brings the characters to life.

Aduuni is a courageous, bright young girl from rural Nigeria with a dream to finish her education and become a teacher, speak up for herself and to educate and fight for young women just like her.

Her journey to realise her dream is difficult and heart wrenching but she remains optimistic and hopeful and makes some wonderful friends along the way.

This is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review and encourage potential readers to choose this extraordinary book to read. The storyline, the characters and the way it’s told all rolled into a magical experience!

Brilliant story and narrator!

What a beautifully read and beautiful story, highlighting the reality of being an african woman in a patriarchal society. We need more voices like Abi Daré's!

English is not a measure of intelligence!

What a book! Give it a chance. It will astonish you. It took a while to get into the depth of the protagonists story but what a courageous young woman. Well done to the author on pulling this piece off.

Five stars all the way. Absolutely loved it

This was such a special book. Tender and heartwarming. But also humorous in parts. This is a book where a great narrator can take a book to a whole new level. This story will stay with me for a long time to come.

Uplifting Story

Disclaimer, I have met the author. Having said that, it is a wonderful book. Being a man, I take umbrage at this book being in my humble opinion biased towards women. As every man in this book is flawed bordering on evil, with the exception of one. Being a Nigerian, I am aggrieved by the fact the only decent non-exploitative Nigerian is UK educated and influenced. The attitudes of our once colonial masters give the impression they continue to be our social betters.
My grievances aside the story is told with heart warming simplicity from the illiterate Adunni’s standpoint. The tale is at once harrowing, disheartening in places and uplifting in most, a veritable emotional kaleidoscope, which is just unexpectedly thrilling. You find yourself rooting for Adunni’s indomitable spirit and in so doing your heart and mind are opened to her cry not just for herself but for others like her to be human, to express their self-worth, to have their Louding voices heard and for there to be a different approach to their treatment. Adunni’s voice from the pages resonates clear and loud.

Never read a book so powerful

What a beautiful read. I would forever hear Adunni's voice in my mind, speaking and urging me to live free and let my voice be loud and heard in any room I enter into. Thank you for this beautiful masterpiece. The narration was done so well. kudos

Compulsive listening

The best performance on audible I’ve ever heard. This book is written in pigeon English and the narration was extraordinarily good at bringing it to life, conveying emotion and characterising different voices. And it’s a wonderful book.

Beautiful developed and powerfully told

This is not just any story, it is a powerful story with the strongest characters whom we get to know over time. It is a story about resilience, monetary wealth versus character wealth. It is a story about moral poverty versus moral riches. It is a story that take the reader along, routing and hoping as we get to dream along with the characters for a better future.
