About this listen
Renowned author Delphine Larue needs a haven. A crazed fan has gone over the deep end, and she’s not safe. Her security team has suggested a house by a lake. Secluded. Private. Far away. In a beautiful area of the Northwest close to the sleepy town of Misted Pines. It’s perfect. So perfect, Delphine has just moved in, and she’s thinking she’ll stay there forever.
Until she sees the girl in the mist.
After that, everything changes.
Delphine quickly learns that Misted Pines isn’t so sleepy. A little girl has gone missing, and the town is in the grips of terror and tragedy. The local sheriff isn’t up for the job. The citizens are up in arms. And as the case unfolds, the seedy underbelly of a quiet community is exposed, layer by layer.
But most importantly, girls are dying.
There seems to be only one man they trust to find out what’s happening.
The mysterious Cade Bohannan.

I always feel a bit funny reading books where the main character is an author, especially when the other characters all praise them as amazing, it's hard not to wonder if it's a bit self inserty on the actual book authors part, but all in all, it worked for the narrative.
If I had to nitpick about the book I'd say that the main characters/relationship are maybe a bit too perfect. This is true for book 2 as well. The main characters are all very successful and skilled in their chosen fields. Most of them are wealthy without having lost touch with reality. They're great parents and have emotional maturity by the bucketload. There's really no lesson the main characters have to learn, or personality flaws they have to overcome, their obstacles are almost entirely external. This doesn't leave a lot of room for character development, which is usually a pretty important part of a well-crafted narrative.
However personally, I did not mind this as I was more than happy for the primary drama to come from the murder mystery rather than character drama between the leading couples. It feels like every other romance book these days is doing some spin on the Enemies to Lover's troupe, and that can be great, but this is a nice change from all the books where the couple spend half the book fighting.
My other minor nitpick would be that there are a lot of characters and it's occasionally difficult to keep track of what's happening and who's done what. I like that Ashley doesn't handhold the reader too much but occasionally I had moments of 'wait what?' although that could partially just be me not always paying complete attention.
PERFORMANCE: The performance was solid, really nothing bad to say about it. The narrator embodies the character and I enjoyed her voice.
A great series
