Publisher's Summary

Second novel in the chilling and epic new fantasy series from the best-selling and critically acclaimed author of Prince of Thorns and Red Sister.

On Abeth there is only the ice. And the Black Rock.

For generations, the priests of the Black Rock have reached out from their mountain to steer the ice tribes’ fate. With their Hidden God, their magic and their iron, the priests’ rule has never been challenged.

But nobody has ever escaped the Pit of the Missing before.

Yaz has lost her friends and found her enemies. She has a mountain to climb, and even if she can break the Hidden God’s power, her dream of a green world lies impossibly far to the south across a vast emptiness of ice. Before the journey can even start, she has to find out what happened to the ones she loves and save those that can be saved.

Abeth holds its secrets close, but the stars shine brighter for Yaz, and she means to unlock the truth.

To touch the sky, be prepared to climb.

Critic Reviews

"Dark, passionate, tense, with a female hero anyone could relate to - I was utterly fascinated! This is no pretty, flowery tale, but one of vastly different people struggling to survive when a hostile government comes to power." (number-one New York Times best-selling author Tamora Pierce)

"If you like dark you will love Mark Lawrence. And when the light breaks through and it all makes sense, the contrast is gorgeous." (Robin Hobb)

"An excellent writer." (Number-one New York Times best-selling author George R. R. Martin)

Incredible storytelling!

Written almost like poetry, and Helen Duff's narration is almost musical. How she manages to take even the most gruesome parts of the story and make them sound almost soothing is quite the talent!

Now to wait for book 3!

Mark Lawrence is a Legend

Mark Lawrence has become an auto buy author for me and this did not disappoint! Helen Duff has to be one of the best Narrators on audible! Looking forward to the 3rd instalment. Having already listened to the Book of the Ancestor trilogy, so many things are now falling into place and making more sense!

Excellent!

Mark Lawrence has done it again. What an exceptional follow up to The Girl and the Stars. Both are odyssey fiction at it's very finest. Folklore and God lore, long forgotten technology, travellers from far flung places, superstitious worshippers, power struggles, so many threads intertwined it does your head in trying to disentangle them so don't bother. Just listen -or read - for the immense travel pleasure it gives. The narrator of course may not be your cup of tea, but I can't think of anyone better. Her flow is seamless and her voicings and characterisations flawless in my estimation. Helen Duff handles male characters believably which is a huge plus for me. Her neutral narrator voice is hypnotic and warm and draws you in like a comforting bath. I love her idiosyncratic vowels and soothing tones and deft talent with Northern accents. She also has a delicious talent for malice and threat. She can elicit shivers. I can't wait for the next instalment, for of course the ending of The Girl and the Mountain is a cliffhanger of epic proportions or just left to your imagination - you choose - me, I'll be counting the days. Get on with it Mark!

A brilliant and interesting series

So original. I love this series and am really looking forward to the third book. The narrator is excellent with a wide range of voices. It was wonderful to listen to with so many ideas I’d never seen in other books.

Dull narration gets in the way of a good thing

I love the story arc of this trilogy and each of the characters’ journeys has been fascinating to discover. Some powerfully written female characters and much thought as to the ethics of different ways of life. But I reckon it needed a good strong editor’s hand to slash about a quarter of the text. The story is unfortunately hampered by overstating the obvious, over explanation and long-winded sentences. Add to the mix a lack lustre narrator voice makes this listening experience hard work. I want to know what happens next. But I keep wondering if I can get through another overwritten novel narrated by an extremely feminine voice with a very narrow range. I feel for Ms Duff. She has to manoeuvre her fragile voice through an incredible array of characters ranging from children to machine like beings, and great god like creatures centuries old. You can hear the strain in her voice in some sections (Thurin, Hades, Seus for example) Her handling of Zene and Maya’s voices was perfect however.

Packed out with long descriptive passages.

I was looking forward to a fast moving story line with plenty of action. The first few chapters started out that way then unfortunately the author seemed determined to fill the hours with long rambling descriptions. These did not add value to the story in fact they served to divert from the main story and confuse the reader. This book could be condensed to 2 hours and achieve the same outcome. I’m unlikely to read any more in the series.
