About this listen

The wonderful new novel from the Man Booker Prize shortlisted author of The Glass Room is both a gripping adventure story and a moving meditation on patriotism, betrayal and the limits of love.

Marian Sutro is an outsider: the daughter of a diplomat, half French, half British, naive yet too clever for her own good. But when she is recruited from her desk job by SOE to go undercover in wartime France, it seems her hybrid status - and fluent French - will be of service to a greater, more dangerous cause. Trained in sabotage, dead-drops, how to perform under interrogation, and how to kill, Marian parachutes into southwest France with an urgent mission....

Critic Reviews

"The Girl Who Fell from the Sky comes from a long and glorious tradition of spy novels that you just can't put down. It's taut fiction at it's best." (Stylist)

A thrilling book which will capture the reader from the start. If you are looking for an insight into occupied France in the same vein as Nancy Wake and Charlotte Grey, this book will not disappoint.

A good insight into occupied France

As the heading says, just a waste of time. Don’t bother. Instead of a thriller it was just an introduction the length of the book.

No story at all

What did you like best about this story?

The ending was good, and I think it was very appropriate, and didn't require explanation, or continuance

Have you listened to any of Anna Bentinck’s other performances? How does this one compare?

First time with this narrator, and I think along with Jim Broadbent, occupies the No 1 spot. Accents were accurate, and managed a variety of voices to sound quite different from each other. In a word Flawless.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really. It isn't an emotive or sentimental book.

Any additional comments?

Some parts of the story were a tad slow, but in general it was a wonderful listen, lots of action, and a good length. Highly recommended.

Action packed great read
