Publisher's Summary

Robin Loxleigh and his sister Marianne are the hit of the Season, so attractive and delightful that nobody looks behind their pretty faces.

Until Robin sets his sights on Sir John Hartlebury's heiress niece. The notoriously graceless baronet isn't impressed by good looks, or fooled by false charm. He's sure Robin is a liar - a fortune hunter, a card sharp, and a heartless, greedy fraud - and he'll protect his niece, whatever it takes.

Then, just when Hart thinks he has Robin at his mercy, things take a sharp left turn. And as the grumpy baronet and the glib fortune hunter start to understand each other, they also find themselves starting to care - more than either of them thought possible.

But Robin's cheated and lied and let people down for money. Can a professional rogue earn an honest happy ever after?

Contains mature themes.

Fun and vibrant

This is not as deep as some of KJ Charles other books but it’s an absolute joy and everyone in it are some of my favorites. It was nice to have a book be gentle with me for a change. That’s what I come to the historical romance genre for yet too often I feel positively battered. This was a blessed change of pace that is well deserved compared to reality.

Fantastic narration, so-so simple story

It seems to happen to all good authors. At first they write incredible prose, plots, and characters. Then they realize they have to compete with the bad authors who kick out horrible stories every few weeks. They rush to fulfill the readers demands for a new book and end up writing simple garbage that isn't worth reading.

It's sad. KJ Charles used to be an incredible author with believable characters with depth and plot lines that kept me interested. Not anymore.

Honestly the only reason I bought this audiobook was due to Cornell Collins. And he made the book okay rather than awful. But he couldn't save what was a simple, boring, and unbelievable story.

Lovely story ruined by bad performance

Perfectly lovely and entertaining story spoiled by terrible performance.

The narrator ruined Hart’s character, making him sound like Lord of the Ring’s Gollum and completely missed the mark.

Could not finish listening for that reason and had to quit half way into the book.

Picked up as it went on

I thought this book was heading for a “nice enough 3 stars” but it got better as it went on and sucked me in, so upped it to 4 stars.

Excellent as ever

Charles can do no wrong; I know this delightful Heyer-but-gayer bonbon of a book was knocked out while she was struggling with writer’s block on the Will Darling series, but it’s an absolute delight.

Collins puts in another very engaging performance as the narrator.

Formulaic and Bland

I don't know what has happened to KJ Charles because her books used to be enjoyable. Her most recent books have been really poor - no matter what her fangirls say. It similar to Josh Lanyon in that no matter how poorly plotted or rushed a story is there are some readers who will love everything by an author no matter the quality. This story was phoned in, and unoriginal. The fortune hunter trope is over used for mf historical romances and it's used here too. The only difference is a few mm sex scenes in the middle of the story. Cornell Collins narration made the story passable.
