About this listen

People are like flowers. If you give them the right environment in which to grow, they bloom.

'It put a spell on me' Lesley Pearse, Sunday Times Bestseller 'Charming' Katie Fforde, Sunday Times Bestseller

With nothing but time on her hands, retired nurse Rose Lanyon finds herself drawn to the garden that had once been her husband’s pride and joy.

It may have started as a means of honouring her husband’s memory, but her little Cornish garden soon becomes so much more – a place where the lost and lonely can find solace, the forgotten can be remembered, and second chances take bloom. Because, as long as new life is growing, there will always be hope and new memories to make…

I love gardens - but not as much as Rose. Rose and her growing love of the garden are the main characters. But Rose also loves people and makes possible the growing of various plants and the growth of relationships linked with plants. The garden becomes a community of unlikely associates who come to trust one another and to heal their memories by making unusual connections. Some of the plot lines seem simplistic but Amanda uses mystery to unveil her diverse characters and a friendship garden which brings satisfying growth to all. Throughout, Elaine Claxton’s reading breathed individuality into each character and was key to my enjoyment.
