Publisher's Summary

1881 - Special Agent Gillian Hamilton, magic caster for the Federal Bureau of Magic and Steam, has recovered from injuries obtained while in Shallow Grave, Arizona. Now back in New York City, Gillian makes an arrest on New Year’s Eve that leads to information on a gangster, known only as Tick Tock, who’s perfected utilizing elemental magic ammunition. This report complicates Gillian’s holiday plans, specifically those with infamous outlaw, Gunner the Deadly, who promised they’d ring in 1882 together.

The two men stand on the cusp of a romance that needs to be explored intimately and privately. But when Gillian’s residence is broken into by a magical mechanical man who tries to murder him on behalf of Tick Tock, he and Gunner must immediately investigate the city’s ruthless street gangs before the illegal magic becomes a threat that cannot be contained.

This might be their most wild adventure yet, but criminal undergrounds can’t compare to the dangers of the heart. Gillian must balance his career in law enforcement with his love for a vigilante, or lose both entirely.

The novel-length follow-up to The Engineer, in the exciting new steampunk series, Magic & Steam.

Such a fun listen

I don’t usually read steampunk but I love this author so I gave it a shot and I’m glad I did because this is such a fun read. Declan is a new narrator to me but he did a fantastic job with Gillian and Gunther I hope to hear more from him.

Extraordinary

CS Poe has captured my interest, big time. I rarely listen to an audio book a second time, but Poe’s first book, The Engineer, was so interesting I listened a second time. The Gangster is a captivating second book in a series (I’m keeping fingers crossed) will continue. May your steampunk muse continue to visit you, C.S. Poe.

Intriguing, wildly creative, and hot!

CS Poe’s “The Gangster” manages to swirl together a detective story, a burgeoning romance, a secret past and a coming-out story with steampunk elements to make a very tasty treat. Tremendously powerful ‘caster’ (even more powerful than his agency realizes) detective Gillian Hamilton picks up where he left off with tremendously competent, way-too-observant and handsome outlaw Gunner the Deadly, this time in his home base of late 1800’s alternate-universe ‘magic and steam’ New York City. Somehow in the middle of a fast-paced adventure involving steampunk cyborgs, Hamilton manages to come to terms with his own multi-faceted 'living a lie'. This enthralling story bounces from terrifying chase scene to sweet encounter organically, with us along for the fun. I found the audio performance to be excellent, with clearly delineated and appropriate character voices.
Highly recommended!

Fantastic story!!

C.S. Poe has an awesome imagination! Gillian and Gunner are back!! This was fantastic!! Gunner has come to New York to spend New Years with Gillian when Tick Tock strikes! A magical, mechanical man breaks into Gillian’s apartment and tries to kill him. Gunner helps to thwart the attack. The stakes have never been higher!! The world that C.S. Poe has created is amazing and whimsical! The characters have depth. I was anxious reading the story, I never knew what was going to happen next. This was an amazing story. I loved the pace of the story, it did not flounder. Great character development! Declan Winters does such a fantastic job with the narration!! Sooo freakin good!!

Combine a criminal and a law man and the magic is explosive

The Gangster by C.S. Poe was given in exchange for an honest review. Imagine, New York end of 1881 into 1882. Gillian Hamilton, a federal agent meeting the number one wanted man Gunner the Deadly for New Years Eve. The presence of TicTock and his deadly band of monsters ruins Gillian and Gunner’s date. With the weird new magic and its effect on Gillian as well as his boss Moore finding out who Gillian was dating it was going to be a long few days. I loved this Audiobook. Declan Singers was the perfect narrator in his wonderful voices of Gunner and Gillian the audiobook brought a whole new dimension to the story. The story was engaging right for word one. The descriptions and world building Poe gave us was like being an observer as the events took place.
The chemistry between Gunner and Gillian is beautiful and so real in essence you want them to be together always.

Sit back, buckle up and get ready for the ride of your life.
The Gangster is a fast paced, action filled mystery/romance that is a joy to read!
Declan Winters does an outstanding job of bringing this story to life!

Declan is a KEEPER

Gosh this was such an amazing, emotional performance. that's saying a lot considering one MC is a bit stoic and monotone lol.

I had wondered if those last few scenes were gonna hit as hard when i knew what was coming, but the delivery was SO GOOD i was waiting with bated breath and felt the same gripping feelings!

As someone completely new to steampunk and any sort of paranormal readings, I felt the audio really helped make the picture clearer for me. I've always been more of an audio learner and it really brought out how well Poe builds up the world and Gillians magic. Even as a rookie, even when reading alone, ive never felt overwhelmed or confused. This just made everything more vivid and allowedme to be just as wowed by the magic as the characters. Declan is a KEEPER 😍🔥

Brilliant

I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of this, and this is my honest review. I should begin by saying that audio books aren’t my favourite method of consuming books, or they weren’t until I heard the audio of The Engineer (prequel to this book). I found that the slower pace of listening to the words brings out the quality of the writing, and Declan Winter’s narration brings the characters to life. When I read the books, I concentrated on the plots, the settings, the action and adventure. This time, the characters of Gillian and Gunner come across so strongly. Gillian’s struggles - with everything - and Gunner’s calm competence hold the story together. Really, buy this if you can. I loved every minute.

Brilliant steampunk adventure/romance!

Wow! This is a good example of steampunk and fantasy done well. I love the continued world-building with its mechanical villains and magic-infused weapons - I could almost see them in my minds eye, (thanks to the writing and narration). The mystery, suspense were well written and kept me fascinated to the end (it ends on a cliffie, but you'll become as invested in the couple as I am, so it won't matter 😀).
I liked how Gillian and Gunner's relationship developed - especially Gillian finding someone to be his rock. There is a lot going on with the main characters, especially Gillian and memories of his unhappy childhood), making this a layered story. I can't wait to read/listen to the next book!
Narration
If you have to experience the story, this is the way to do it! Declan Winters was great with the first book and excellent with this one, considering that there are more situations to deal with. I loved listening to his voice for Gunner, and the others, but Gunner....! Best of all, he conveys the atmosphere of a gas-lit 19th C New York with his tone, I really could "see" the scenery, the "mechanical man" and the other characters.
Highly recommend!!!
