About this listen

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson—creator of the smash-hit science fiction and fantasy series Skyward, The Stormlight Archive, and Mistborn—comes a new science fiction adventure. Narrated by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading.

A man awakens in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there. Chased by a group from his own time, his sole hope for survival lies in regaining his missing memories, making allies among the locals, and perhaps even trusting in their superstitious boasts. His only help from the “real world” should have been a guidebook entitled The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, except his copy exploded during transit. The few fragments he managed to save provide clues to his situation, but can he figure them out in time to survive?

Note from Brandon:

Sometimes an idea just won’t let go of you for years. The initial seed of this novel was the title that eventually turned into The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England. At first there was no story go to with that title, but I wrote it down and kept coming back to it, wondering what that book could possibly be about. Something else I thought about off and on for years was the classic concept of a man waking up in another time and another place, with no idea how he got there. It was when those two ideas came together, and I placed a book with that title into that man’s hands, that this novel was born. I hope you’ll have as much fun with it as I did!

Fun, clever, and grand

This book is way outside of the scope of what I’ve read from Sanderson before. I love the characters and their journey. Slightly too on the sappy side, but it’s a great world and a fun jaunt!

A pleasant, short listen with a straight forward story

Once again Brandon Sanderson has created a new world of characters, possibilities and a story that is equally believable and fictitious. The narrators do an excellent job as they always do with other Brandon titles and I look forward to my next read/listen.

Confused but in a good way!

I don’t want to give too much away, but as the main character was often confused, so was I. The pieces fall into place and he becomes the man he always wished he’d been, redeeming himself. He had people on his side, rooting for him, a new experience. A little bit of responsibility and others believing in him helped the transformation. We don’t need to move to a new world to have a fresh start. We do need to have our eyes open to the possibility of changing the world and ourselves.

Beginner friendly sci-fi novel

Rating: 3 stars.
Spice level: n/a.
Genre(s): sci-fi, historical fiction.

Overall impression: the only Sanderson book I've read before this is Warbreaker, an epic high fantasy novel with insane world-building, complex sub-plots and diverse characters. This was the complete opposite of that book. It was very simplistic with bare bones character creation, a linear plot that didn't have any layers and fine world-building for a standalone novel. I still really enjoyed it, even though it was completely different from what I was expecting. It actually suited me really well as something to listen to while commuting on the train - though it's not something I'd re-read or recommend as a first choice to someone looking for their next fantasy or sci-fi novel.

Tropes:
➵ Alternative universe
➵ Time travel
➵ Futuristic tech
➵ MMC has amnesia
➵ Flawed characters
➵ Medieval British folklore
➵ Gods & goddesses
➵ Mafia vs police
➵ Romance sub-plot
➵ Happy-ever-after (HEA)

⤷ Narration:
The Audible narration by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading was really well done. It was clear and had pretty good pacing - though I found 1.2x speed to be a comfortable reading pace for me personally. Michael did most of the characters and put on different voices for each of them, which 'fit' how I envisioned them well. Kate read for the Wizard's Handbook narrator and I could appreciate the humour of it a lot more than I would have been able to if I had read the written text instead.
