About this listen

A world in chaos. Two very different women. And the mystery of the man who may connect them.

The stunning new novel from beloved Australian storyteller Belinda Alexandra.

Paris 1946: Sabine Brouillette is a war crimes investigator with the French secret service. She lost her family, including her young son, when her Resistance circuit was betrayed near the end of the war. New evidence comes to light that the traitor was a British double agent who went by the codename 'the Black Fox'. Now her quest for revenge has a single focus: find the Black Fox and kill him.

Sydney 1946: Landscape designer Diana White has been waiting six years for her husband, Casper, to return from the war in Europe. Her son, Freddy, was only a baby when his British-born father joined the RAF. But Casper is a changed man when he returns from the convalescent hospital in England where he has spent the past year under mysterious circumstances. No longer the easygoing personality Diana fell in love with, he is now darker and more secretive.

Soon Sabine and Diana find themselves on a collision course - one seeking vengeance, the other willing to go to any lengths to protect her family.

Praise for The French Agent:

'Right from the first chapter you know you are in the hands of a wonderful storyteller. Great characters, a gripping plot and a twist I didn't see coming.' Mary-Lou Stephens, author of The Last of the Apple Blossom

'Tightly plotted and packed with plenty of twists and turns, The French Agent is an unputdownable story of secrets, espionage, family and revenge, brought to life by Alexandra's meticulous research and lovely prose. This is historical fiction at its very best.' Better Reading

A wonderful, wonderful story, as usual but Lordy, please, I beg the powers that be, find other narrators!!! Shocking, irritating very hard to listen to!!

Another wonderful Alexandra but...

Thoroughly enjoyed the plot, pace & insight. The narration was excellent except for the male characters - totally off putting but still did not dampen my enthusiasm for the book or it’s reading.

Great character development & great research

Relaxing reading but some themes not particularly well developed which made the story seem incomplete.

Not her best

Yet another amazing story

The narrator had the main characters down, but when she was speaking as one of the others in the book, she managed to change her voice, but it was so forced and unnatural, it was annoying.

Story was good, but …

I love books about the resistance etc and this was no exception but the narration was most irritating. The attempt at make voices were shocking and further the attempt at trying to adopt an upper class male accent was such a spoiler. Finally, the place in England spelt Berkshire is pronounced “ Berkshire” sorry to be pedantic. There were a few other mispronounced works but I think I will leave it at that.
Regards from an upper class English woman who lived in Berkshire 👏🙏

Narration

The narrator of the French agent- Sabine was great, the narrator of the Australian woman- Dianna was just dreadful. It was like a really bad amateur ham play deliverance of the role. I found myself praying for the French connection narrator to come back. Sadly the role of Dianne was front and centre and it ruined the book completely. Story didn't really start moving until about chapter 45.

Narration a Disappointment

I have read all of Belinda‘s books, and found this one to be very easy to read. The ending certainly is not what I was expecting, and I can recommend this book to anyone who loves Belinda’s stories. :-)

It pains me to say this but the story was dull and predictable compared to most of Belinder's other books. I like the narrator of French character but the narrator for the Aussie was so boring had to speed it up which helped somewhat but still felt like I was a child being read to.

Dull and predictable
