Rollicking Adventure
Phylida Nash is such a skilled reader who colours every character so brilliantly that it is a pleasure to listen to her.
This particular Georgette Heyer is a very funny adventure with a delightfully ditzy 'blonde', a young man learning to be bold and independent, without losing his gentle character, and a budding unexpected romance. I highly enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot and the calm saneness of the not so beautiful romantic heroine.

Excellent fun!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my very favorite recordings of a Heyer book! The central characters are sweet and capable, the many side characters are totally engaging, their dialog is sharp, and the situations they face become more and more knotted until all unravels completely in a delightful ending. Great fun, and Phyllida Nash is simply the best reader of Heyer books there is.

a joy to listen to, great narration
One of the things I love about books by Georgette Heyer is the different types of heroes and heroines. This book has that, with the very shy duke who would never be the lead character in any typical romance. Her books make you believe in the average person. I love this plot, the scrapes that he gets into, the incredibly ditzy foundling, the transformation of the duke and therefore of his romance. Loved it from start to finish. And I have yet to hear narration by this author that was not first rate. Always love her work. Highly recommend this one.

A Unique Story for Heyer
I love G. Heyer's historical romances and mysteries. She is a good writer and her historical fiction is very accurate since she was an amateur historian. Many of the publications she refers to in her books, she actually owned. She could read Middle English and Middle French (I do good just reading modern English - Chaucer had to be translated for me to understand it.)
Readers who prefer the cotton candy of modern authors most likely will be bored with the meat & potatoes of an older style of writing.
The idioms and phrases of the time period will seem awkward and foreign at first, but hang in there, by the third chapter you will be thoroughly enjoying it and incorporating some of the lingo into your own vocabulary.
Delightfully no porn! I highly recommend this book to those with college level or higher reading skills.

Under appreciated!
The Foundling isn't one of Heyer's better known stories, but it deserves to be. The story is delightfully complex, with myriad plots and characters intertwined throughout. The conversations are so very funny, and if the situations are a bit contrived, well, you'll forgive it when you find yourself laughing aloud at the antics of Tom, the goose-wits of Belinda, and the pomposity of the Duke's kidnapper. Best of all, it isn't only a romp but a surprisingly nuanced coming of age story, with a hero who will capture your heart.

I need a hero...an unlikely hero!
For those who like the alpha male hero type, there are many of Miss Heyer's titles to chose from. When I was 18 and first started buying and reading Miss Heyer, those were the books I was most attracted to. I am glad that as I have matured, my taste in romance has also matured. I re-read her romance novels frequently and noticed the change in my reading taste by age 30. Give me an unusual hero, the unlikely hero.
This is one of my favorites. Gillian, born a duke and an orphan, is small and gentle and much tried by his overprotective relatives and staff. He goes on a quest in this novel, incognito, to prove to his relatives, his staff, and himself, that he is a man and not a boy, and can tackle unusual sticky situations without relying on his title. The author throws in an alpha male type as cousin and friend to the real hero, for contrast and amusement.
The narrator does an excellent job with voices for the many characters.

Wit and humour, but it does drag at times
Any additional comments?
This is one of Heyer's longer comedies, and both when read as a book and narrated in audio it seems too long for the content. It's a good, fairly classic GH storyline about the tyranny of family affection and a young man trying to assert his right to make his own decisions. A lot of well drawn characters from the overprotective household headed by Lord Lionel the domestic despot to the gloriously unrepentant villain, Swithin Liversedge, and some real comedy moments. This is a more male book than usual, with no obvious 'heroine'. The beautiful Belinda, without a thought in her head except rings and purple silk dresses, is not one, and Gilly's bride is a pleasant girl but low key. Phyllida Nash's reading is her usual excellent standard, but sometimes you just want to get out and push; it could have done with being an hour shorter. I still prefer this to having an abridged version though, they never work.

Slow start!
I found this book had a slow and ponderous start, too much inane detail, and for the first few hours it felt as if the reader was bored by it as well. I nearly gave up, but it does get better, and towards the end makes you smile and a couple of times laugh out loud! For me, one of Georgette Heyer's weaker titles. Some likable characters, just takes a long time to get to them!

Not one of the best
What would have made The Foundling better?
The story was not good. The 'children' were stupid in the case of the girl and unpleasant in the case of the boy. The story would have been much better without these two.
What will your next listen be?
I really like Georgette Heyer and will listen to another story by her. I just hope the characters will be better in rhe next book
Which scene did you most enjoy?
There was not much to enjoy in this book. I can't think of one.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Boredom.
Any additional comments?
Many of the Georgette Heyer books are vey good indeed, but not this one. Phyllida Nash is always very good and it is a pity she had to work with such a poor story.

Excellent supporting characters - lol
A Georgette Heyer book that come to life with all the supporting characters who bounce through it. The main romantic characters are two quiet, highly ranked members of society with retiring personalities. The Duke soon "wakes up" when he comes across: Tom, a overgrown, full of mischief schoolboy. Belinda, a beautiful widgeon who will go off with any man who offers her a purple dress. Liversedge, the amusing villain. Plus many other interesting characters who appear at every stop on their travels. Its a wonderful piece of writing, I laughed out loud several times and must have had a smile on my face the rest of the time. If you want a typical Heyer Romance, try a different book. While romance is in here, its much more about the story of the Duke "finding" himself....and its Excellent!
Phyllida Nash is excellent as the NARRATOR, she manages to give all characters different voices and its easy to follow the flow of conversations.

I am thrilled to have discovered audio books because there is so much more detail apparent when listening than when reading it yourself. Phyllida Nash has done a superb job with her interpretation of the characters - I couldn't stop listening. It was laugh out loud at times. Please sign her up to do more, how about the Grand Sophy - one of my favourites. I have read all the Georgette Heyer novels over the years - several times - however this new dimension is like discovering them for the first time. The Foundling is delightful, and I highly recommend it for first timers to Georgette Heyer.
